Finger Foods for Breakfast
« on: June 11, 2006, 19:47:59 pm »
I was wondering if someone could give me some advice.

DS is getting  very bored with being fed with a spoon and now pushes the spoon away from his mouth.

I was wondering if someone could give me some ideas for fingerfoods for breakfast.

Thanks
Paula

I would give toast with peanut butter or melted cheese, maybe some grapes, apple, banana, english muffin, boiled egg slices easy to hold.  Try a few of these maybe one or two might work for you.  I am going trought the same thing myself my 18 month old only wants finger food however she will eat her breakfast from a spoon.  I give her roast potatoes for dinner but cut small enough for her to hold.  I keep the carrots brocalli and cauli big so she can hold it and she just loves picking up green beans peas and sweetcorn in her hand.  Another thing she loves is fusilli pasta with pasta sauce she can eat it with her hands and you can mix in tuna and sweetcorn and serve with garlic bread.  She also loves lettuce, cheese, cucumber sliced and ham rolled up.  crocettes (wrong spelling) are good too with pizza slices.  Peppers slices are good too they are sweet  And sandwiches cut into four brown bread with what ever filling ham is preferred here are a good filler too.  Hope you get a few idea's out of this

Thanks for your ideas - they sound great - I think I will try toast - he usually has that as a snack at some point in the day, so could change that over and give him fruit as a snack.

All your other ideas sound good - will definitely try them for his lunch and dinner.

Thanks for your help.

Harvey used to love this and we got this from Annabel Karmel

1 tsp Marmite mixed with a little Boiling water and then spread that on a piece of bread (both sides), put in a hot oven (about 180%) for 15 mins.

We used these as snacks for Harvey.

French toast/eggy bread made with egg yolks, waffles cut into bits (can spread some peanut butter or puree on there), whole grain pancakes cut into bits, and scrambled egg yolks come to mind. We've gotten into the habit of ignoring "rules" about what constitutes breakfast foods, lunch foods, etc. because Tyler eats tons for breakfast and hardly anything for dinner. We often give him steamed veggies for breakfast since the only time he'll eat them!

I see that two of you have suggested peanut butter - when is that ok to give a lo who hasn't shown any allergic tendencies?

Im in Ontario adn I was told PB is a year. I make her the eggy french toast tylersmummy said. yum yum. I spread it with plain or blueberry cream cheese (its good enuf for mummy to eat).
MY LO seems to hate brekkie altogether and eats about 5 pieces or 5 mouthfuls of food. :( very distressing. We also like pasta for breakfast too.

Most of what I've read recommends peanut butter at 1 yr, but some wait longer, especially if there is a concern about allergies.

When they say allergies - is it only nut allergies or all of them?

Just wondering as both DP and I suffer from Hayfever, should we hold off longer than 1 for peanut butter?

Most children who develop life threatening food allergies have either asthma or a family history of asthma, excema or hay fever. These severe allergies most often occur in response to nuts, peanuts and shellfish.

Peanut allergies and nut allergies are NOT the same - peanuts do not grow on trees and are therefore, not true nuts.

Delaying the introduction of allergic foods can help reduce food allegies - so if you do have a strong family history of hay fever, I'd probably have your DS tested for allergies before trying nuts, peanuts or shellfish.

Weird as we were told pb at age 5.  Or was it 4?  I do have asthma, but not d/t allergies.  Have to wait on eggs until 2 d/t my childhood egg allergy.  But told pasta and pancakes and such were fine.

Thanks for the pb info, Marisa Mom.  I was thinking that since Kenzi hasn't shown reactions to any food so far that we're clear, but she does have mild excema and the ped thinks she may have seasonal allergies.  I didn't consider that those types of allergies could show a tendency toward food allergies as well.  All interesting stuff.
