5 month old routines (BF'ing w/ solids)
« on: June 13, 2006, 02:37:31 am »
Dr advised me to feed solids at 4 months.  I was just wondering if my routine is ok.  Would appreciate if anyone would post their routines at 5 months.  Thanks:)

E:  6:45 (BF)
E:  8:30 (cereal w/ breast milk) about 1 tsp w/ 1 ounce of milk
S:  8:45-10:30
E:  10:30 (BF-bottle usually about 5 or 6 oz)
S:  11:45-12:30
E:  12:45 BF
E:  2:00 fruit
S:  3:00-4:00
E:  4:00 (BF-bottle usually 4 oz)
S:  5:15-6:00
E:  7:00
S:  7:30 or 8:00 depending on how long feeding goes.

Not trying to criticize you, but why did your doctor suggest starting solids so early?  My doctor told me it was fine to start solids at 4 months too, but many doctors out there aren't completely up to date on the newest recommendations.  If you still choose to start solids, that's your choice.  I'm not trying to attack you - I just want to make sure you have all the information before making such an important decision that can have lifelong implications on your child's health.  :)

See http://kellymom.com/nutrition/solids/delay-solids.html

Aside from that...

Personally, I would cut out the afternoon fruit and replace it with BF.  Ounce for ounce, bm is much more nutritious than any solid food you can give.  It contains carbohydrates, proteins, fat, digestive enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and antibodies.  It is the perfect food for infants.  At only 5 months, it is so much more important for baby to be getting bm than solids.

It's great that you're BF before giving solids though.  Make sure baby fills up on the good stuff before offering solids.

Careene-

I think your routine looks great! It looks like you're taking solids nice and slow, which is just perfect for a beginner. If you take a look in the EASY forum, you might find some routines for other babies on solids. Some eat more, some less...what it comes down to is what works for your LO! It sounds like things are going well, so I wouldn't recommend turning back the clock and cutting out a solid feed at this point.

The last couple of nights she has been wanting to eat @ 7:00, 8:30 and then I will do a dreamfeed at 10:30.  She has been waking up at 1:00 and 6:30.  The only thing I can think of is I have changed her routine to 4hrs instead of 3hrs.  Now the bottle at 1:00 and 4:00 she is only eating 2oz or 3oz max!  Is this normal?  This must be why she is waking in the night?!? She is refusing to go to bed at 7:30 yesterday she finally feel asleep at 9:00pm and tonight was 9:30.  Any advise as I am really confused she was doing so well on the 3hr easy, she slept thru the night :(  I miss that!!
