1am like clockwork!
« on: June 21, 2006, 14:58:43 pm »
Our gorgeous 2 month old daughter finally settled into a lovely routine a couple of weeks ago with regular naps in the day (averaging 1 and a half hours) and a night's sleep from about 8pm to 3 or 4am!
We were using the EASY plan and it finally felt as if everything had slipped into place.
Unfortunately, over the last couple of days, while the naps in the day haven't changed, she's been waking at 1am every night!
She wakes with a cry and seems unable to self soothe (something she's been handling fine before) then we get 2 hours of rage crying where any amount of patting and shushing won't calm her.
She spits her pacifier out, gets too upset to bring any gas up and eventually cries herself into being hungry for her regular 3am feed.
We suspect it's probably gas, but this disruption of her routine just seems to have come out of the blue.
We recently bought anti-colic bottles that initially seemed to improve bringing up her gas, but now it seems to be building up for 1am.
At the moment the routine is starting to become a 2 hour session of crying between sleep sessions!

She also seems to have a real problem with her 3pm nap. Sometimes she'll stay awake right through from that feed to her bedtime feed.
Could this be related?
We've tried dream feeding at 10 to see if that helps, but being a touchy baby it tends to wake her up. And when she's in a deep sleep she just won't take the bottle at all!
Any advice?

Absolutely. Good day sleep = good night sleep.

What does she do during this nap? Is it a gas problem as well? If she's waiking at 1am every night and the time doesn't vary, then you could try wake to sleep and that might do the trick.

Her 3pm feed is followed by activity. Usually lying on her play gym kicking her feet and looking round. (sometimes baby massage)
When she yawns we jump straight in, because if we miss the window with her we usually have trouble getting her down.
Very often patting and shushing will send her off, but 30-45 minutes later she's awake and won't go back down.
It usually results in having to take her out in the buggy, but she'll only drop off after we've been out for about 30 minutes and as soon as we get back in the house she wakes up! Then it's a case of trying to get her off to sleep until her 6.30 feed, which she usually just stays awake for!
We've only tried waking to sleep once and she's so sensitive that it just annoyed her and took us longer to drop her off again.
Most of the time patting and shushing in the cot will work, but not after her 3pm feed for some reason

Are you sure that you're doing wake to sleep correctly? Not to sound dumb, but the idea is to make them stir, not actually wake. Sometimes people get this confused. My DS is a pretty light sleeper, so all I ever needed to do to get him to stir was simply turn the doorknob to his room, and not even open the door. That was always enough to get him to stir. Perhaps you just need a little modification if your lo is also a light sleeper.

Don't want to speak too soon, but it looks like last night may have broken the cycle!
It was bath night, so she had her bath after her feed and when we put her down she took a couple of shushes but then she dropped off straight away at 8pm and didn't wake until 5am!!!!
Fingers crossed!

I think the problem with wake to sleep for us is that there's a fine line between stirring and waking and we need to catch her just right before she wakes up completely. It's timed right a few times, so we definitely won't dismiss it in the future.

Spoke too soon!
But we think we know the problem. She appears to be going through a growth spurt (making new noises, draining her bottle!) but she's also suffering really badly from wind.
The 1am wake up is still happening, but it's clear that the pain is waking her up now. Then it takes 2 hours to get her back to sleep because she gest overtired from the wind keeping her awake!
Bit of a vicious circle!
She then sleeps straight through until 7am. But it's obviously not a proper full night's sleep. She's just exhausted from the wind
I'll put something into the "wind" section to see if there's anything we can do to combat it.

Ah yes, good old wind. Have you tried gas drops? They worked wonders for us!

We had our first full night's sleep last night!
From 7.30pm to 5.30am! She woke twice but managed to send herself off both times!

Wind's still a problem but not nearly as bad.
We live in the UK, so I'm not sure if we've got the equivalent of gas drops
We're using gripe water with mixed results
