Gags when offered vegetables
« on: June 14, 2006, 11:24:42 am »
Our 6 month old LO has been enjoying a fruit pot each afternoon for a number of weeks now. I've tried introduce some veggies around 11am-midday but he absolutely hates them to the point where he spits out the spoonful and then gags. I've also tried vanilla baby rice and the same thing happens.

I have no idea what to do - he's still loving the pureed fruit but I can't seem to get him to eat any vegetables even the sweetest carrots etc.

During our monthly check up the doctor suggested stopping trying vegetables for a couple of weeks and instead getting him used to new flavours with a flavoured milk bottle (carrot/green veg/leek & potato). He likes these veggie milks but won't take anything from a spoon which isn't pureed fruit.

Does anyone have any suggestions? (I've also tried mixing a bit of carrot with lots of apple and he gags at that too!).

Michelle

Don't worry about it.

Breast milk should be the main source of nutrition for the first year.  Solids are for experimentation only.

You are responsible for what your child is given to eat and how it is presented.

Your child is responsible for how much and even whether he eats.

Just continue to offer healthy choices.  Babe will decide what he wants to eat.

Michelle-

He's still pretty young, so I wouldn't worry too much about it yet. Easier said than done, I know, but keep in mind that it can take 10-15 exposures to a new food before a baby will even THINK about eating it! I'm wondering if it might also be a texture issue...sometimes veggies purees aren't quite as smooth as fruit purees. You might try thinning it out with some breastmilk or formula and to make it pretty runny.

He's still getting plenty of nutrition from breastmilk or formula, and preferences can change in the blink of an eye, so hang in there!

Hi ladies,

He has organic jars - I've also give him organic homemade purees but he always eats more of the jarred puree. It might be the texture as you say - it's definitely smoother from the jar....I'll definitely try thinning down the veggies to see if that makes it more appealing.

The gagging is such a dramatic reaction it's almost funny - he's being such a drama queen!

Best wishes, Michelle

Hi, have you tried mixing a spoon of homemade food with the jarred food? Then gradually increase the homenade stuff so it becomes thicker.
