Feed as soon as DD wakes up or wait til hungry?
« on: June 14, 2006, 17:43:46 pm »
Hi,

I'm new to these boards so apologies if this question has been asked already.

My DD is just under 10 weeks old and I'm trying to do EASY with her - she's on a sort of 2.5-3 hour schedule. My problem is that she never sleeps longer than 2 hours since the last feed so when she wakes up she's doesn't seem at all hungry for sometimes up to an hour, which means then when she feeds she's wants to fall asleep again and gets grumpy if I keep her up to do her next activity.

So I suppose I have 2 questions:
(1) Should I try and make her sleep longer? She currently sleeps anywhere between 16-18 hours in every 24 (12 at night) and when she wakes from her naps she's really awake with no yawns or anything.
(2) Should I feed her as soon as she wakes up, even though she's not asking for it, or should I continue to wait until she starts to show hunger cues?

Again, sorry if this has been asked before - I want to do EASY but at the moment it's ESYA!!

Thanks.

16-18 hours is about normal for a 10 week old.

I would feed her as soon as she wakes.  This will keep you on the 3hr EASY.

Thanks for the reply. I'm a bit confused though, if I feed her as soon as she wakes I will only be feeding her every 2 hours....

So she is sleeping for an hour at a time then?

Could you post your routine please?

You would want to feed her every 3 hours.

Thanks for your reply. Because of the confusion, we don't have a whole day routine, but it starts of as follows:

Wake/Feed: 7.00am (15 mins)
Activity: 7.15am (45 mins)
Sleep: 8.00 (1 hour)
Wake: 9.00am - this is when I get confused...

So then she's awake at 9.00am - 2 hours after her last feed - and as I said she won't be hungry, she'll want to play again. So do I feed her at 9am when she wakes (2 hours from last feed) or wait another hour or so until she starts acting hungry and it's 3 hours since the last feed? If I do wait until 3 hours, then she's been awake an hour again and will be tired the minute we finish feeding and want to sleep.

Sorry if I'm not explaining myself very well!

Jo

I would guess if she wakes up cring to try to extend her nap, but when she wakes up happy let her play, feed her, but not let her fall asleep, do quick nappy change after feed and then put her in bed. This is what I would do. Hope it helps.

Peglet, I have exactly the same problem. My DD does most of her sleeping at night which is great but it does make EASY trickier during the day. I don't want DD to end up with a bottle sleep association.

Sorry no advice, but you are not alone! :)  I will be looking for tips in your replies!!  :)

What would you do, is try to extend the nap so it is 1hr 30mins

So if she got up at 7am Feed her, put her to sleep at around 8am-8.15am for 1hr 30mins so she wakes up at 9.30-9.45am and then feed her at 10am.

You should work towards for the beginning

7am Feed
8.15am Sleep 1.30mins
10am Feed
11.15am Sleep 1.30mins
1pm Feed
2pm-2.15pm Sleep 1.45mins
4pm Feed
5pm Sleep 1hr
7pm Feed then bed

See how she gets on with this routine.

Thanks to everyone for your comments/help.

I'll can try and extend her naps but she wakes up very playful and excited and refreshed-seeming, so I'm not too confident! Still, I'll give it a go. If she won't have it, I'll try and put some small activity between her feed and going to sleep again.

Thanks again  :)

In that case, if she naps for 1hr and she is awake and happy, try extending her 'A' times. This has always worked for my DD.
