Throwing up while pooing?
« on: June 15, 2006, 12:33:37 pm »
my little boy has taken to throwing up when he is doing a poo.  this is a new thing - since he started "real solids", i.e. pasta and chicken, etc.  he only does about one poo / day - and sometimes he can go a couple of days without.  he strains quite hard when he is pooing and cries sometimes, but the actual poo looks normal - not particularly hard, or anything.  has anyone else had a similar experience with their little ones? i can't tell whether he is constipated, or not.  i have tried all the constipation remedies and they don't seem to make much difference.  He was fairly irregular when he was on breast milk exclusively - would typically do just one poo / week, or two at most, and was quite refluxy until he started on solids, if that means anything?

i never thought i would ever want to go into such detail about poo, but it seems to have become a significant feature of our lives...

Lydia does this.  She used to throw up every time she pooped.  She still strains and cries.  The NICU nurse told me it was due to pressure.  It can also work the other way round - they can pooh while be being sick.  They should grow out of it.  Certainly, Lydia isn't as bad as she used to be.

sounds reflux related to me.  Rachel has now finally, at last, outgrown the reflux but can still bring back her meals if she does a huge poo so I know just what you mean.  patience with these developing digestive system hey  :P

Also sounds like a bit of reflux to me.

My DS was a sicky baby (a bit of reflux but nothing major). If he does a poo sometimes he chucks up. I often find that he will poo after a feed and that's when the food / milk is closest to the top and much easier for him to throw up. I know the muscles should mature and become harder to open.

The only thing I would watch is for overfeeding. My DD will throw much more easily if meals are too large or too close together.

HTH.

i think  you are right about the reflux thing as sam had it quite badly when he was little - i just thought that it was meant to get better when he started solids, but i guess not.  thank you all for your help.
