I  read in a book at the health food store that nitrates were a big scare years back as babies were often started on solids at 3-4 months so their systems couldn't handle it but now that babies are not supposed to be started on solids until 6 months the nitrates do not effect them the same way so, carrots are safe (BTW, it's not just carrots that have nitrates). With that said, I am still not making my own, I am using jarred carrots (organic).

Thanks everyone so all the support and advice!

I gave Owen pears today - and wow  :o and I thought he liked the cereal!  I cried because he was just so funny and cute, and LOVED them so much!  This is such a great time!  I love being able to make food for him.  I just have to keep Daddy from eating Owen's food lol.  Today he was doing one bite for Owen, one for Daddy LOL!  I said, Hun you have teeth go get yourself a dam pear!  LOL

I am going to hold off on carrots, there are so many other food to try - they can wait!

Hugs and thanks!

Hi there
thanks first time mom for the info for the mill the other day, but unfotunatly I'm not in Toronto and don't have a Crayons store here. I'll keep looking for it anyways. I wonder if a ricer would do the same.
Oh and happy belated 7 month b-day to your LO too. My LO was only due on Dec 9th though. I guess he was sick and tired of being in mommy's belly.

And for the carrots and other veg with nitrates, I would trust the jarred organic as they are screened.
And thanks everyone for all the ideas.

Zoey,

I didn't have the time to read every reply, but I don't think you've got this answer yet.
Yes, avocado is the main ingredient in guacamole.
You don't cook it, just peel it but make sure it's nice and ripe (should be soft to the touch and a nice green colour). Then mash very well with a fork. When I gave it to Paul, he loved it!!! It's easy to prepare and to digest. Give it a try!

Avocado was one of the first foods and he gets some days. I made a mush with bananas and tofu this weekend. I make alot of food at once- partly b/c I work fulltime and have a nearly 4 yo trying to help. This weekend I made 3 trays of avocado/tofu/bananas, 2 trays of pears/apples, and 3 trays of ground beef/sweet potato/white potato/green beans. I also saute some tofu with st potato and white potato for finger food. COnsidering that he eats 2-3 cubes fruit for breakfast, 2-3 cubes at lunch, 2-3 cubes at dinner-- it will last about 2-3 weeks. And then I'll make another batch. I just use steamer and food processor.

How old is your lo?
I have been wondering about tofu!  It's ok to give?  I have been reading that the estrogen levels in soya products may not be good for babies. How much is in one of your cubes?
I am going to try avacado this weekend b/c I am going to be making guacamole for dinner guests on Saturday.

He's 10.5 months. Just started a few tofu chunks y'day (and hoping for the best). He had a MPSI, but seems to have outgrown it. We never eat tofu, so hoping to expand the whole family's eating habits. I don't think tofu has actual estrogen in it, but substances that act on estrogen receptors- that's why some women wiht hot flashes have relief of symptoms when increasing tofu in diet. The tofu came in a large square block and I just maybe 1/3 of it (?1/2 cup) so divided between 2 ice cube trays- not much in each serving. He loves avocados! And I gave him some mild guacomole also- yummy! I love http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com for ideas.

Hi Girls!

I have a question about bananas.....how old can you start introducing them? I gave my LO mashed banana about a month ago when i started introducing solids and the following day she did a couple of pooey nappies with, what looked like black cotton cut into bits in it. I was very worried and took her to the doctors as i didn't realise what had done it and when i gave her banana again the following week the same thing happened and so i realised it was banana. Has it happened to any of you?? Hasn't happened to any of my friends. Weird! Oh well......

Thanks Stacey!! She was fine - seemed to be in a bit of pain passing it but that's sometimes the case with her. I haven't given her banana again - i'll hold off for a bit with that one. Thanks for your words of advice.

Ok!  I have made pears, peaches, apples, sweet potato, squash, avacado (thanks stacy), plums.   I tried to cook and food mill fresh green beans and it was a disaster as they were stringy and too textured for my liking.  I am going start with these foods and see how things go.  If anyone sees anything dangerous Please let me know!

Also - I am looking to do in the future:
Peas - frozen
Mango
Frozen green beans - Im thinking the french cut style will mill better?

Are these ok?  I am sorry to have so many questions but I just want to make sure I am doing this right!

TIA
Zoe

OH and so far all I have given is pears and rice cearel which have gone more then well.   ;D

Peas and green beans always have an odd consistency- so I usually mix them with other food. You're on a good start!

Rofl!  I am insane yes - I am just SO excited!  Probably more excited the Owen is LOL.  I never thought about the re-freezing the had been frozen!  Omgoodness I am a flake!  See this is why I love it here.  Had I not come here and posted I would have given him twice frozen foods - that is BAD BAD BAD!!!  I can't believe I am so flakey - considering my kitchen looks like a lab when I cook his stuff - I am SO careful not to get cross contaminate anything - and I was gonna feed refrozen stuff... sigh.

The avacado tastes like well - nothing.  What is it supposed to taste like?  LOL  I thinned it out with some of the left over liquid from steaming the peaches as it was really thick.  I hope that was ok.

Thanks for everyone's help.  I am going to stop making food now LOL

Hugs
Zoe

Jeni, I make peas- I steam them then put them through the processor with a bit of water, then through a strainer to get rid of the skins. They come out nice and smooth and I freeze them in the baby food cube tray.
