Teat problems - giving lo wind!! Help!
« on: June 16, 2006, 06:17:04 am »
Hi all,

My lo of nearly 8 months is up most nights with terrible wind (bottom end!) Sometimes she'll sleep for an hour and then be unsettled.  Each night is never the same.  e.g last night - she slept for hours and then woke at 4 with loud wind noises and crying in pain.

She's been on solids since 19 weeks.  I have cut out the obvious culprits.

I've got her on 2nd stage of teats which were working.  Bottle is now making squeeking noise all the time whilst feeding - air getting in to her??

I've tried the next stage of teat but she chokes with it as the flow is too quick.

Any ideas??????  She's such a poor wee soul.  Could she be intolerant to certains foods?

LOL

xx

Have you tried using the variflow teats so you can adjust the speed she takes fluid in as she feeds?

oh yes, try the variflow.  Rachel was put onto the bottle when in special care and they advised us to use variflow and we have never used anything else.  that squeaking means she is taking the milk way too fast so you probably need a slower setting, where as on other days she might need to take it faster, the variflows allow you to deal with this

I really recommend them, despite the cost  ::)

Thanks for replying.  She's been on 2 for a while and then I bought 3 and it was too fast for her.

I then bought 2 variflow teats and tried her on the "3" but it was going too fast for her and it was all coming out her mouth and she was struggling.  Strange thing is, she seems to suck lots and put in a lot of effort on the non-variflow number 2 teats, so it's not right for her.

I'll give the variflow another try.  I assume you just turn the teat around to suit her suction?

Yes, the ones we use have marks on the teat and you just put the marker for the speed you want to use opposite the baby's nose.

Hi there, just wanted to add that my lo was on stage 3 teat and was struggling as it was to fast, we put him on to vari flow but he has it on 1 for some reason, doesn't make sense but suits him perfectly!! He is now 1 and has been on it since he was 8 months.

I dont know if this has been asked already but is she on avent bottles/teats?

Forgot to say, its very late, he he he! My lo was on Dr Brown bottles for the first 5 months of his life.  These are the most amazing things, combats wind completely!  They are expensive but well worth it.  I had to have 6 as he was feeding regularly but at 8 months you may get away with 4 or less depending on how often she feeds! I bought 2 to begin with to see if they helped, I had to wash them and sterilise them 3 times in 24 hours but I wasn't going to waste my money if they didn't work!! They truly are amazing, I would definitely try them! xx Good luck, let me know how you get on!

I would also like to praise the Dr Browns bottles, my son (5 months) still uses them with the lvl 3 nipple and they have been a life saver since a month old.  He was a different baby with them.  We were using the Platex ventair, which Im sorry for anyone who loves them - I thought they were garbage.

Dr Browns are sold in singles so perhaps buy one and try it out!  They have a few more parts to wash but heck, its so worth it!!  Good Luck!

Hugs,
Zoey

Tried variflow last night but she wasn't impressed - mind you, she's not well - conjuctivitis/cold.  I will keep trying them and on the 1 setting as the 2/3 are too fast.

Am going to try and get some Dr Brown bottles though - they sound fabby!!!

Thanks for all your support.

Hugs
Julie
