Health Visitors visit
« on: June 18, 2006, 15:44:05 pm »
My son JW was 2 in april this year, about 3 months ago, my son's health visitor came to do his check up for his 18 to 24 month check up (speech, weight etc), I was unable to attend due to hospital appointment, so my husband stayed for the visit, everything was fine, until he got weighed, he wouldn't go on so they weighed my husband first, then placed JW in his dad's arms and weighed together, and took it away, she said he was slightly underweight and slightly under height, which I think was ludricrus, considering what he eats, he a very good diet and even asks for 2nds sum times, when we explained what he eats for eg pasta, all fruits, potatoes basically everything except chips, and even now he will eat them if he fancies them, she said give a little more fatty foods for eg. chips, pasties etc.  My husband just said wasn't there enough obesity in the country as it is?  No comments was made for this.  What do you think???

My son has always been big for his age.. very tall and having a large frame.. at 11 months he is 2 stone and about 2lbs...

I have always been cuddly so I worry about his diet and really want him to have healthy foods so that he does not become obese... he's been having cereal with mik for brekky, veges and meat for lunch followed by yoghurt, and more veges for tea followed by fruit. He also has the occasional snack of some sort like toast or cheerios or a baby biscuit..

When I ran through what I am feeding Will a couple of months ago she said that I shoud be offering more snacks.. and that basically I was underfeeding him...

BUT, here in front of me I have a happy, healthy baby who sleeps through and is active and bright... so I let mummy sense kick in and I carried on as I had been and he is still putting weight on appropriately, hes still happy and bright and fine.

I think the key is a balanced diet with healthy fats in the right amounts and if they are getting that and are happy and healthy we have to trust our mummy sense..

My LO won't be getting pasty or chips for a long time.. and I am betting yours won't be either! You have to do what you feel is working for your LO xxx

Does he get poorly alot? If he's a healthy little thing then I'd say do what Helen suggests and just go with plain old mummy sense. You know him best!

Holly is very thin, but then so am I, she's gone into 18-24 months for length of leg but her trousers and skirts fall off her waist! I've had to take loads of them in!!!
She eats like a trooper but is very rarely ill, so knowing her family background I just carry on as I am

Hiya Tracy

It is sometimes difficult to decide what to do when HV are telling you one thing, but your instinct and knowledge points somewhere different.

Ciara has always been below the average centile for weight but it over for height.  I think she is just naturally slim and I am happy with that.  Like your lo she eats tonnes and tonnes - both healthy and treats - and we are happy with that.

My son has always been big for his age.. very tall and having a large frame.. at 11 months he is 2 stone and about 2lbs...
Ciara is 3 and is 28 pounds!!   I make this point not to say that gorgeous Willie is too big - but to show the variation in what is healthy.   :)

Lol.. thats a fab illustration of how different LOs can be.. Will is a big lad but apart from chubby thighs he is not fat at all.. he's blessed with my heavy bone structure poor kid and is the height of a 2 year old..  Heaven hep me when he is in his teens - he wil be soooo tall!!

When my dd had her 18mth check, the nurse weighed her first & told me she was considered obese for her age.  Then she measured her and said that she was tall for her age & taking that into consideration her weight was perfect.  DD is a skinny girl but she is heavy (bout 2st).  The nurse really got me angry coz you can see dd ribs when u take off her top & her tummy is as flat as an ironing board.

If you're not worried bout JW, if you are happy that he's healthy, then he's fine.  These averages don't take build into consideration.  Your son could just have a small build.

I ordinarily side with medical professionals on things like this, but I'm appalled that she'd suggest offering your DS more junk food! I think your DH was spot on with his reply to her! My DS is 2.5 and has always been off the charts in height but in the 50th for weight. To most people, he looks skinny, but it makes perfect sense when you consider that DH and I are built that way too.

The other gals said it best...trust your instinct! Healthy kids come in all shapes and sizes!

If he's slightly underweight AND underheight than average then he is the right size for him - not everyone can be be right on 50%! So I wouldn't worry about his weight at all. Definately don't give him junk food ! If you want to increase the fat in his diet it would be better to give him full fat dairy products and butter, not chips and pasties!

My LO went through a stage of not putting any weight on and I was advised to increase her intake of foods like avocado, salmon and lean red meat. I think these foods have healthy fats and are high in protein too. Would be better than chips and pasties, that's for sure! Not sure where some of these health visitors get their ideas!

Yes, I think we take those growth charts too seriously. Like Melissa said, the other factor to take into consideration is genetics. I don't expect DS to be excessively tall as neither DH or I are. And both my mom and I are skinny, so no surprise DS was below the weight average until recently (he's now above average whilst eating like a bird, go figure !). I keep track of his weight gain on the chart but would only worry if he started losing weight and not putting it back on
