Falling asleep on her own????
« on: June 19, 2006, 05:16:56 am »
I need help with my 2.5 month old little girl.  She doesn't know how to fall asleep on her own.  I started letting her fall asleep while nursing and I would just put her to sleep in her crib for her naps or for bedtime.  She is now starting to be very dependant on the breast to get to sleep and will sometimes wake up when it comes out of her mouth.  She is also having a difficult time falling asleep for naps during the day.  She will just start crying and not alot that I do will sooth her, except letting her nurse some more.  I don't want this trend to continue as it is not very realistic and I really want to be able to just put her down for her nap while she is still awake and she will be able to fall asleep on her own.  I have read the first BW book but I haven't seen the second one yet.  I have read lots about the shhh pat but I don't really understand how to go about it.  Any insight and explaination on that would be great.  I understand the 4 S's and I have tried to maintain somewhat of a wind down routine with her.  I don't have a rocker or chair in her nursery as of yet so I have to sit out in the living room to nurse and calm her.  I am hoping to remedy that this week so that I can get her into a routine of being in her room to calm down and get ready for a nap.  I have read about EASY, and she is on it somewhat, except when she falls asleep while nursing, that kind of skips the activity part, so any advice on getting her on a true EASY routine would be very welcome also.  I am feeling very overwhelmed because I know that I need to get her to learn to fall asleep on her own, but I really don't know where to start and what to do!  I know that I can't continue to nurse her to fall asleep, I really don't want her to learn that she has to eat before she falls alseep always.  I would also like her to be able to fall asleep on her own so that I can get her to nap easier when I am away from home at her grandparents or friends places.  I would really appreciate some help, advice, instruction on what to do, where to start, what to expect, etc.  I eagerly await your responses!!!

Thanks so much!

Hi Mackennas mom and welcome to the boards.

I would recommend you buy traceys second book asap as it has detailed explanations of how to teach your baby independant sleep.  It really is invaluable.  In the meantime here is the link you need for sssh/pat https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=26672.0.

By the time your dd gets to 3 months you can rectify her using the breast as a prop by PUPD (check out the PUPD board and FAQs) in the meantime sssh/pat is your best bet.

See how you go with the link and any further questions - just ask.  HTH
