8 week old night wakings
« on: June 25, 2006, 15:27:45 pm »
It seems that my little girly wakes quite often. I thought she would have stopped by now. She gets her dream feed between 10-11PM, wakes between 1-2:30AM, then again between 4-5AM. Will she EVER grow out of this!?! Her naps are a huge problem as well, but that is another post on the Naps board.

She is right on track for 8 weeks :) I know its hard, but it will get better, give your LO time and yourself a brake. Your doing a great job :)

Ditto to Karita - she's doing quite well for 8 weeks!

That makes me feel good! I am glad to know! My sis said all 3 of her children slept through the night at 8 weeks!

Don't take this wrong, but I suspect your sister isn't being entirely honest.  ;)  That would be pretty unusual! Plus everyone has a different definition of "sleeping through."  So don't worry, you're doing great!!  :-*

I have to agree. Very few LO's sleep more then 6 hours without a feed at 8 weeks. 6-7 hours btw is sleeping through  ;) by deffinition sleeping through the night is when one or more feeds are missed.  :)

The best advice I got as a new mother was to stop listening to other moms. It all ends up being just one big contest and thats not what motherhood should be about.

You are so right, Karita! Never did I think mothers would be in "competition" over such things.

I think my LO slept through that 1-2:30ish at around ten or eleven weeks.  But he kept the 4 to 5:30ish for months.  Hang in there.  If you are following EASY then it will pay off soon!  ((((((HUGS)))))) for you and those sleepless nights!
As far as naps go I read "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" which was another good resource.  It helped to explain that babies do not really develop a napping schedule until four months and it was right on with mine!  I was upset because I wanted him to have scheduled naps each day but it wasn't until 4 months that he really developed that.  So hang in there.  What kind of nap problems were you having?

so at what age do you stop the 2 am feed?  and if my LO is waking like clock work 2 am and 5:30 am do I just feed her or can it still be habitual waking?  she is 8 weeks.  Nee

Nee, sorry, but I haven't a clue on how to answer your questions. Being a clueless new mother I am always the one asking questions, too. Good Luck!

Summersusu - Basically, it is very hard to get in descent naps for my little one. I could resort to holding or rocking, but I haven't did that just yet. Also, if she happens to doze off, there is no telling when she will wake. It may be 10, 20, or 30 minutes after I leave the room. She definitly needs her sleep and I don't know what to do for her. Also, when she wakes between 4-5AM, it is very hard to get her to settle again. Her wake time is 6AM. I just don't know what to do for my little one unless I resort to intentional AP.

Do you do the shush pat method and block out visual stimulation?  I sit in a chair in her room swaddle her and do shush pat until she is quite and has her eyes closed then continue in her crib.  It took me 1 hour to 2 hours at the biginning and a few grey hairs to get her on track however now it only takes me 20 minutes.  Do not give up it will happen and it's all worth it.

Nee, I do not use the shush pat method, but have tried. As for the shushing, it just doesn't seem to phase her. She sleeps on her back, as most babies do, and I have tried patting her chest, shoulder, and tummy, but it doesn't work either. What I do is rub her cute little bald head. It works OK, but not like I think it should. Any suggestions are very welcomed. I block her eyes once she is a bit drowsy. If I do it otherwise, she gets more worked up. My poor little girly is so very tired.  :-\

Try this..

Swaddle your LO and take a seat in a comfy chair thats easy to get out of, or walk, either works, lay her on her side, either faceing you or faceing outwards, just make sure she isn't to close to your chest, Give her a paci or something to suck on, NOT the boob though, then rock sway gently, and shhh by her ear, not into it as that will hurt her ear.

This is a modified pat/shh we used for DD when she was the same age as your LO. When she calms and enters the first stage of sleep, lay her down, at first she'll wake up repeatedly, its still a lot of work, but if you stick with it, it WILL work.
