Sleep position/swaddle for 3 wk old wtih acid reflux?
« on: June 25, 2006, 21:46:40 pm »
Hello -

My 3 week old dd has acid reflux and spends most of the evening miserable.  We are slowly getting her on a schedule during the day (2.5 - 3 hour EASY) but she wakes up every 2 hours at night showing signs of hunger.  I feed her and put her back to bed but she is often awake and miserable during these hours.  I think this is due to her acid reflux and want to raise her crib up; however, how do you do this when they are swaddled?  I envision my dd squirming enough that she will roll down the elevated portion of the mattress.

Thanks for any help you can provid.

Jen

you can try rolling up some receiving blankets and wedging them around her (1 one each side & one at the bottom); that should help her stay in place if you elevate the mattress.

chances are that lying flat after she eats is very uncomfortable cause of the reflux & that's why she's awake so much in the night - as you pointed out.

Hello

You could also try putting a telephone directory or another big book under the mattress of her cot to elevate it.  That works a treat, I do it when dd is teething or has a cold.

Can you please explain about using the blanket keep him from sliding down the crib? Doesn't that turn into a hazard?

Thanks for the help.  We didn't elevate her mattress last night and she had a really horrible night.  I thought we were down to waking up every 2 hours (instead of screaming throughout the night), but she was up from 2 to 5 last night and now having problems with her morning nap.  She was gagging on the milk and wanted to nurse constantly but I know the constant eating will make it hard on her stomach and acid reflux.

Does anyone know if there a place to post questions specifically for babies with acid reflux?  I'm wondering if I should adjust her schedule differently from a typical 3 hour EASY or do anything else differently because of her acid reflux. I'm starting to feel like we're going backwards as we just turned her nights/days around and now she's back to being up so much at night.

Thanks,

Jen

hi everyone,

guess i wasn't specific enough.   :-[ you elevate the mattress from underneath with a blanket or book, like Louise said.

numberonenole - about the blankets - you use receiving blankets, so they are thin.  you can use 2, if they are bigger (like carters brand), 3 if they are smaller (gerber).  lay the blankets down end to end so the ends overlap a bit.  then you can roll them up, making one really long roll that won't come apart.  you can then use it as a wedge from shoulder/armpit, down around the feet (or under the bum & have the feet go over the top), to the other armpit.

safety - the blanket shouldn't really be around their face, but if they squirm towards it, receiving blankets are usually thin enough to breathe through.  [obviously, though, don't do any of this if you are not comfortable with it. ;) ]

you can also use that trick to keep them from sliding around in their bouncy seats when they are very little.

we do have a reflux board - check it out here:
