feeding or dummy?
« on: June 27, 2006, 03:12:47 am »
Hi
I wondered if there was a particular way to tell if my lo was dreamfeeding or using my nipple as a dummy. He often falls asleep during the nightfeeds and continues to suck, I can never work out if I should let him continue sucking or take him off and put him back to bed
Thanks

I'm able to feel a difference between feeding and sucking. When my dd feeds she makes a light "ca ca ca" noise and sometimes, if I listen carefully, I can hear her swallow whereas if she's sucking it actually feels different and she makes no noise. How long does she normally feed vs her df? I know we shouldn't time a bf session but it may help you as well. Keep in mind they may feed slower during a df, at least my dd always did.

My lo seems to take ages with the df and that is why I feel he may be using me as a dummy. I get impatient 'cause I want to go back to bed and thats why I'll pull him off. I will try and listen for swallowing tonight. He is very noisy when he feed during the day, not so at night.

Are you doing a dreamfeed, or is he waking for the feeds?  The way you are describing, it sounds like a habitual waking, not hunger.  Are the times sporadic, or consistantly the same?

Also, how old is your lo? Newborn night feeds always mean hunger, once they are older it may be hunger or habit.

He's waking for feeds.  He is 14 weeks old. It's not always the same time that he wakes. Last night he woke every 2 1/2 hours. Last week he was waking at around 10.30 and then 3.30.

The two feeds of 10:30 and 3:30 are very normal for a lo and do sound like hunger to me at that age especially since you say it's not always at the same time. Waking every 2.5 for a feed sounds more like a growth spurt. I would continue to feed at these times for now and then when he's older, wean him from the 3:30ish feed first.

Thanks for the advice, my lo has never had consisitant wake times. He woke every 3 hours two weeks ago and I thought that was a growth spurt.
I hope he settles into consitant wake times soon. Thanks again.
