Breastfeeding a 12month old
« on: June 27, 2006, 03:34:28 am »
Hi i need a little advice on tweaking my times for breastfeeding mainly the lunch time feed. I currently feed 3 times a day my routine is as follows:
6.30 wake
6.45 Breastfeed
8.15 Breakfast
9.30-11 Sleep
11.45 Lunch
2.00 Breastfeed
2.30-4 Sleep
4.45 Dinner
6.30 Breastfeed
7.00 Sleep
My problem is the 2o'clock feed he is falling asleep during it so i put him in his cot asleep. This feeding to sleep isn't a problem with his other nap and night time bedtime (he puts himself to sleep). Can anyone suggest how i can give him a breastfeed without him falling to sleep.Perhaps i could breastfeed him first then lunch. I don't offer snacks as he never seems hungry between feeds. Or at 12 months does he really need this breastfeed anymore? What do and did others do at 12 months. Thanks any advice would be appreciated.
Julie

There is a big gap between meal and b/feeds, I would guess that could by why he's not interested in snacks.
Could you give him a breastfeed within a 1/2 hour of eating lunch?  That way he's having a bf long before he goes to sleep at after 2pm.
Don't know about whether to drop the second breastfeed... perhaps when he shows less interest in it because he is getting enough from other meals.

Another option could be:
breastfeed when wakes then 7am breakfast,
9/9:30 snack
11:45 lunch, then breastfeed after
2pm have snack (or after he wakes at 4)
dinner 5:45-6pm
breastfeed any time between dinner and bed.

depends how that suits you!

I agree - bf closer to your meal times, and then probably add a snack or two inbetween.  With dd1 I did actually drop that lunch time feed, so was only left with 2 bf's per day (morning and night).  So whatever you feel is best.  2 good bf's per day (plus some cheese/yogurt) will cover your lo's dairy nutrional requirements.
