how to extend time between feeds?
« on: June 27, 2006, 10:24:05 am »
Hi, I'm new here.  Glad I found this board.  But can't say I have much time to visit.

My colicky daughter is 4 weeks old and is 7 lbs now (was born under 6 1/2 lbs).  In Tracy's book she mentions how a baby's feeds can be 3 hours apart now.  Any suggestions?  Baby's feeds are only 2 hours apart.  She was on the breast for 5-10 minutes but recently have been extended to 15-20 minutes.  I have tried to do all the 'make her feed longer each time' tips.  She doesn't fall asleep but is wide awake and will not open her mouth, just not interested.

Thank you for any help!

You poor thing.  I don't really have any tips for you but I know how you feel and I commiserate with you.  My dd was 8lbs8oz when she was born but it still took her two months before she was able to go three hours between feeds.  If it's any concillation, the feeds themselves get quicker as she gets more efficient.  Hope it all goes well.

pawre,
Hi and welcome to the Baby Whisperer site!  I think that you have done what you can to extend her time on the breast.  At 4 weeks (and being so small...(mine was 6lbs at birth and was lowest at under 5.5 lbs) feeding every 2 hours is fine (hopefully you are getting a longer stretch at night).  The books are a guide and we need to remember to listen to our los.  Sounds like you are doing great... keep up the great work!  You will probably begin to see her take the lead and begin to extend her times between feedings.  Check out this link for more tips...

Best of luck to you and come back and ask more questions  :D

Congratulations with your LO.
The range is usually anywhere from 2-3 hours. It is a range and a lot of young babies start at 2 hours (We did). Her tummy is very little - imagine how much milk must fit in there!
The intervals will naturally become more spaced out as she gets older. Tracy's timings are guidelines - the most important advice she gives is about responding to your baby's cues and learning how they are communicating with you. If you feed regularly now it will help your milk supply in the long-term. This phase won't last long.
