milk and nothing but milk
« on: June 28, 2006, 01:44:24 am »
Hi there,

This may be the opposite of a more common concern ("won't drink milk"), but my dd (20 mos) does not drink ANYTHING BUT milk. She drinks 8 to 12oz milk per day, and this is the only liquid she takes in. I am concerned that this may not be enough liquid for her.

I have tried giving her water, apple and grape juice (diluted with water to several different degrees), and barley tea. She would take a sip and decide she doesn't like them (and would not even touch them afterwards). Then I give her milk because I worry about her fluid intake, and she drinks down the milk.

Should I try harder to get her drink other than milk? I really think 8-12oz of fluid is not enough for a day (she sometimes has hard stools), but I can't push her to drink more milk than this. Besides, I think this is enough amount for milk already... so how can I encourage her to drink other stuff???

I would appreciate any kind of suggestions.... thanks in advance!

16-24 oz of milk/dairy per day is usually what's recommended, so you could give her more if she isn't eating much other dairy. But that might not help her hard stools. Tyler's also a milkaholic, and what we do is water his milk down. Each time I refill his cup he gets half milk, half water. If that's too watered down for her, you could always adjust the ratio and gradually add more water as she gets used to it.

Tyler also hates most juice, but we've had some luck with watered down orange juice. I think the other kinds of juice might taste too sweet to him. You could try other juices that aren't as sweet, even tomato juice and see what happens. Good luck!

I just brought this same issue up with our ped at my son's last appt.  Our problem is that he doesn't like ANY fluids, and only drinks a few ounces of milk a day, and maybe a few more ounces of water.  He rarely drinks more than 10 oz of total liquid in a day.  The doctor said that he wasn't worried about his fluid intake as long as he is still wetting a few diapers a day.  He said to add extra sources of calcium, like yogurt and cheese, and to add high-fluid foods, like fruit.  Will she eat liquidy fruits like watermelon?

Melissa had a great idea about the diluted milk.  How about fruit smoothies?  Sometimes they like that ice-cream consistency.  Good luck with it!

Hi Melissa,

Thank you so much for your great suggestions! I'd like to try diluting dd's milk... that seems to be the easiest transition to non-milk fluid. I had just always assumed that orange juice is too sour (she doesn't have a taste for citrus fruits yet), but it's definitely worth a try...and I didn't think of tomato juice! I actually hated it as a kid but who knows... I'll give that a shot, too.

As for dairy intake, apparently I didn't mention it but she LOVES her yogurt and eats about 10 to 12oz of it every day, so there's enough dairy for her.. (and this is another reason I'm concerned about her fluid intake... both milk and yogurt are contributing factors to constipation, right? And on top of that she eats lots of bananas, too! It's surprising that she doesn't get hard stools every day!)

Thanks again!

Hi Sheila,

Thanks so much for sharing your doctor's comments. It's very assuring... is extra calcium going to help with constipation? Dd eats lots of yogurt and I thought that was not good for easing her stools... but maybe I'm wrong? (then that's a great news!) Unfortunately watermelon is not her favorite type of fruit in the world, but she does eat a fair amount of fruits in general. So I'll definitely try making some smoothies. (Oh I feel like such a wimp for trying only so much and giving up so quickly.... :-[) Thank you so much!!

Hi!  I think you're right that the dairy might make her more constipated...  I hope the smoothies work for you.  I put in the blender about 6 ice cubes, 1 banana (though I'm not sure if you would want to use it with her constipation), a few strawberries, maybe some mango, 2 or 3 oz of yogurt, and maybe a half a cup of orange juice.  Sometimes I add extra water to thin it a bit.

I know just what you mean about giving up quickly.  Sometimes I think, ah, well, he will drink when he is thirsty...  and leave it up to him.   :-\  It's so hard to know...  Good luck with it!

Another idea could be to make juice popsicles.  That way she might get used to the taste of juice and gets some extra fluid.

Thanks for the great idea! As summer gets hotter and hotter, popsicles seem to be a good way to keep her hydrated.

I'm trying watering down her milk (seems to be working with 1/2 oz water added to 4oz milk). OJ wasn't accepted but will keep trying. Smoothies I still haven't tried as I realized that I need to get her to drink with a straw or from a cup first... a feat she hasn't yet mastered and another something I'm beginning to get concerned about (will be another post soon....). Also I started to put more fluid into her meals.. for example I started to give her porridge or risotto instead of regular rice, or pasta soup instead of pasta. She seems to like the extra fluid and sometimes would drink the soup, so I guess that's good...

Maybe I don't need to worry about her hydration so much as her constipation..she's wetting her diapers all day. But then I'm not quite sure how she can wet her diaper so heavily while producing pebble-like stools. Am I mixing up something  ???
