Dreamfeed Problems
« on: June 29, 2006, 09:00:23 am »
Hi,

My baby is 12 weeks old and breastfed, on the 3 hour EASY routine.  (Although struggles to get to the 3rd hour!).
Since he was 4 weeks old I have given him a bottle of formula for the dreamfeed at about 10.30pm.  He always took it with no problems and barely woke up, he generally had 4-6 oz.  Recently, he will not take the bottle.  He fights and fusses and spits it out.  My husband and I both have given him this feed, with no different results.  We can just about get him to have 2 oz. I checked to see if he was actually hungry one night by offering hm my breast and he ate easily and hungrily.

He has his last feed at 7pm and goes to sleep.  With the dreamfeed he was sleeping some nights till 6-7am and some nights with a 3.30am feed in.  Now with the reduced DF he lasts til about 4am.

He breastfeeds for about 20-30 mins in the day. He's a large baby for his age at 15lb.  I feed from one side each time although the 7pm feed he takes two full breasts.  When he wakes for a feed at night he'll take it easily for about 20 mins and goes straight down.

I hope I've answered enough of your questions.  Any suggestions as to whether I just forget the DF or persevere with it or do something different?  He's pretty much an Angel baby so can't figure this one out.

Thanks muchly

Hmmm. I've not heard of your situation I'm afraid. I was also wondering whether it might be a nipple issue on the bottle- did you recently change to a faster one?
You could have a go at mixing in some expressed breastmilk if that's a possibility to change the taste. Or warm the bottle teat as it might feel 'cold' in contrast to a warm Summer boob (!)

You were getting great night sleep  :o - I'm very jealous so I can that you might be reluctant to give it up!

Thanks for all the great advice.  I tried a bigger teat (was using 2 so tried 3), none were successful.  I tried expressed milk, also no luck and I tried warming the milk first, again no success.

I have since dropped the DF, the first night was great he went right through from 7pm to 4.30am, then the next night did until 6am.  I was very chuffed, but since then has many wakings and is very hungry.

Why do they keep changing??!!   :-\
