What is Wheatabix?
« on: June 29, 2006, 16:40:44 pm »
I've seen a lot of mention of Wheatabix as some sort of cereal that you give your LO. It must be a UK thing, cuz I've never seen it here in the US. I did a search for it and found a picture of the box. It sorta looks like a "bar", like a granola bar, yet there's a picture of some of it on a spoon.  ??? I'm guessing it comes in a "bar" form, and then you just break it apart with your spoon.

Anyways, is there some sort of Wheatabix equivalent in the US? I can't think of what that might be.

Weetabix is just tiny flakes of wheat which are put together to form a bar shape. When you put milk on it it goes all soft and the tiny flakes can be mixed with the milk to create something a bit like wheat porridge - which makes it ideal for LOs. Its got iron and vitamins in it as most breakfast cereals have so its an ideal breakfast.

William and I adore it!

Wow, that cereal has a lot of fiber. Bet your LO is pretty regular after eating Wheatabix.  ;D  It looks like a very nutritious cereal. How does it taste? Do you use cold milk or warm milk? Since you mention that it turns into a sort of  "porridge", I was just imagining it with warm milk. Do you know if they sell Wheatabix in the US?

Marisa's Mom,

We have Weetabix in all three of our neighborhood supermarkets here in Maryland. It is usually in one of two places: if your supermarket has a natural foods/organic foods section they may stock it there or if they stock it with the regular cereals, look on the top shelf with the specialty cereals. I had it for the first time when we visited Ireland, and I like it.

It is yummy... sort of comforting lol... you can have it with warm or cold milk. I prefer cold and make Williams up with it slightly warm in the winter and cold in the summer. He eats about 1 and a half of the bars each morning in about 9oz of milk. I made it with formula until recently but we are creeping cows milk into his diet now so I use cows milk.

And yes it does help keep William regular but it doesn't make things tooooo regular if you know what I mean!

Hope you find some.. yum yum... and much cheaper than buying special baby breakfasts!

Marc has his with cold milk because he likes to crunch it, so the last bit doesn't get eaten  ::)
Jamie has warm milk because he likes it mushy.
I'm a warm milk person myself ;D

We have it too here in NJ.  It is so yummy!  I had it when I lived in Australia for a while and have just found it here-- FINALLY!   Just like GabrielleD said I find it in the Organic/natural section of our grocery store.  I hope you can find some!

Weetabix!  "Tastes like dust" as DH's British boss said!  LOL!

Here in Arizona, we have it in the natural food stores as well as Safeway in the organic section.  We all eat it cold (well, I don't eat it at all, I like Grape Nuts instead!), but DH likes it mushy with raisins and DS likes it crispy with a bit of yogurt (not all at once so it doesn't get too soggy).  I like it and buy it because it's very versatile in how you eat it compared to other cereals.

I'll take a closer look at Safeway to see whether they have it. Surely they must sell it in California too?

We have it in the health food section of our Oregon Safeway. I never liked it as a kid, but I might give it another go. Now that DS seems to be ok with wheat. Oh, and when I was a young 'un, it was called "Weetabix" lol  :)

Weetabix is our staple! Only we have Weetbix or Vitabrix here in Australia.  Weetbix are the go.  I crush them up but my hubby doesn't. Bit like the scrunch/fold debate with toilet paper!   ;D
I've put small apricot pieces on top of DDs weetbix before and recently I put raw muesli on everyone's.  Tis really nice, has some sultanas to sweeten.  I think that variation is great for DD as she's getting used to more textures.

So is this served like cereal - do you then spoon feed your LO? Or can it be a finger food? Is it lumpy? DD will only do smooth or finger foods, not lumps. But need new breakfast ideas - she barely eats anything for that meal lately.

I have Weetabix every morning with lots of cold milk and a bit of sugar sprinkled on the top. Haven't tried it on ds yet, not sure why? He's a porridge boy, but I don't see why he wouldn't like Weetabix.

Karen, the texture depends on how long you leave it in the milk, but I wouldn't be brave enough to give it as a finger food - it goes far too mushy. I think if you served it with enough milk, and mushed it up a bit, then it would be great as a smooth cereal-type thing for a spoon-feeding.

One word of warning though, I'm sure I read somewhere that you shouldn't give it to los before they were a year old - the wheat is quite course and could be too harsh for little tummies, that's why they recommend you stick to baby cereals until they are a little older and can handle it better.

TBH Helen, I'd listen to your HV rather than me, when someone uses the words "I read somewhere...." it doesn't usually mean they have the full facts at their fingertips, does it ;) :)? Just thought I'd put it out there b/c it was there in the hazy depths of my mind :).

Wow Charlie's mummy, I hadn't heard not to give weetbix to little ones under 1!   :o Our mother's group all started giving weetbix at about 8 months.  I guess we are fortunate that the little ones were OK with it!

Agree with this, it could have been a contributing factor in Nathan developing his Coeliacs when he did (it's a genetic disease though), but the high wheat content could have triggered it sooner than another child (his appeared at just over 2). *Apparently* we are also told to hold off until after 1 year (only I didn't get told that unfortunately) have read it since.  :-\

Like Australia & UK, it is also a staple breakfast item here - and I laughed to hear in the US it is sold in the health section, but then on inspection of the Weetbix box this morning, it says "Heath Food Company" at the top so makes sense.

Weetbix (or Weetabix for those in the UK) makes a great finger food... Aiden eats it dry broken up & when we were kids we used to eat it with a thin layer of butter or peanut butter on it for afternoon tea
This family goes through a 1kg box/week... 70 weetbix  ;) Aiden, Liam & I have milk & fruit or yogurt & dh has just milk & sugar... in winter I use hot milk, summer, cold milk.
Here in Aus it is the highest selling cereal by a long way & there are ads with members of sporting teams asking "how many did you do today"... at one stage they had "9/10 Aussie Cricketers eats Weetbix... make that 10/10"... they stopped that ad after some of the team changed & we lost the ashes... maybe that is why????

I can't believe that someone else likes them as well, my dad got me onto them, and occasionally when we go shopping I'll pick a couple of boxes up.

I also love Weetabix, and so does my little girl.  I used to make it up with formula as well, but I have started adding cows milk to them instead, my little girl is now 9 and a half months old, and up to yet she's had no problems with having cows milk.

If a had read this a couple weeks ago, and If you hadn't mentioned cricket, I wouldn't have understood the "ashes" reference. But I just started Elizabeth George's novel Playing for the Ashes, and she describes the test cricket thing at the beginning of her book, so I get the reference now.  ;D

Since DD is drinking less and less milk these days (she even makes a face when she takes a sip!  ::) ), perhaps drowning some Wheatabix in milk would be a good way to get her to increase her milk intake. Thanks for the tip!

What does Vegemite/marmite taste like??  I saw it in the store recently and took a look since I've heard it so often on this site.  But the idea of fermented yeast did not sound appetizing at all, despite how good it may be for me!  LOL!

It's something you just can't describe, I know that doesn't help much sorry. If you do get some spread it REALLY thinly at first as it is strong.

What does Vegemite/marmite taste like??

Um..... Cardboard, vinegar, jet fuel.....?  :P :-X
It IS hard to describe, and it IS quite a strong taste. I can also tell you that jam doesn't help it AT ALL!!!! ;D

:-X OMG Deb i cannot imagine jam and marmite together - urgh making me sick thinking of it...

you have to ease yourself into marmite (vegemite is a milder taste IMO) so in the beginning when Dh gave me some (12 years ago) i had tons of butter and a tiny bit of marmite. almost spit it out. the second time i liked it better and by the 3rd time i was hooked.  when i brought it with me home to the states at one point my family could not stand the smell or anything to do with it, but my mom's cat was in heaven and if the jar got opened she would come running from wherever she was hiding - must be like catnip for her  ;D

it IS loaded with vitamins though so is great to give as a simple food for kids - toast/bread with butter/marg and a smear of vegemite/marmite.  some people add it to soups and casseroles as well.

MARMITE and JAM! Oh my GOD!

Definately an aquired taste, I was strictly a Promite person and I took years of me hating vegemite until I had run out of Promite and started eating DH's vegemite!   :o

Now I'm hooked.
Vegemite and cheese are a goer.

MARMITE and JAM! Oh my GOD!

Yeah, yeah, I know that NOW, but I was alone in my friend's kitchen one early morning and it loked like peanut butter! In my defense, it WAS before I'd had any caffeine! LOL

Its fantastic. I have only seen it here in Canada though, not in the US. There really is nothing quite like it. I like mine cold and crunchy too.

Alia absolutley loves it, both warm or cold with milk mixed with pureed fruit or banana.  Its really filling and works really well at supper time to ward of hunger during the night x
