19 mo. won't eat meat
« on: July 08, 2006, 00:40:37 am »
I'm so confused!!!  My dd eats tons of veggies and fruits.  She eats spaghetti-o's and mac and cheese.  She eats like a normal 19 mo. except for the fact that the only "meat" that she eats is breaded chicken tenders or strips.  No red meat, no sandwich meat, no hotdogs (unless you count a half of one), and no fish.  Should I give her a supplement or just let it go?  Does anyone else have this problem?  Should I even be worried?  HELP! ???

My ds was exactly the same and it didn't improve until he was closer to 2 and then he would only eat freshly roasted chicken and then gradually would eat other roast meats - he still won't eat things like meatballs which seem dryer.

I gave him other foods which provided iron such as eggs, baked beans, red kidney beans etc. I would occasionally be able to hide it in little patties made with vegetables and I ground the meat up so fine he didn't know it was there. I honestly think it was the texture that bugged him. He would also eat chicken nuggets (blech) and that was it. I then found some meat chip things that are 97% meat which he would eat, and I also had success with gourmet style sausages (expensive ones with a much higher meat content) that were flavoured with herbs. When he had a blood test when he was 2.5yo he was slightly low in iron (but due to another condition he has which means his food isn't digested, so therefore nutrients weren't being absorbed) - but the doctor wasn't concerned in the least - so I know that even with his absorbtion issue going against him, he was still getting a good iron intake.

DS was like this too.  We kept offering the food to him, putting it on his plate, not making a big deal of it or forcing it and eventually he's started to try and enjoy more types of meats. He still has days where he doesn't like something that he liked yesterday (typical toddler! ::)), but it's much better. We resorted to using sauces here and there when he wasn't eating much (e.g. ketchup, mild bbq sauce, plum sauce), but have to watch it as these have a lot of sugar and we don't always get a good toothbrushing at bedtime!

Is she getting other sources of protein (beans, lentils, eggs, etc.)?

my dd was never a meat fan either.  we've gone vegetarian since then and there are plenty of other sources of nutrition you can give him other than meat.

If you do breaded chicken why dont you try breaded fish or fish fingers or fish cakes? You can even do the same with meat. We started this and now dd will actually eat baked fish. Also meat balls but I find pork ones go down better than beef, also how about oven baked pasta with bolognese sauce and ham in there ( kind of like lasagne). DD actually started eating deli ham and turkey when the guy in the supermarket gave her a little piece to try, now she loves both and will eat mortadella too.
