Freezing Finger Food Meals
« on: July 09, 2006, 19:33:04 pm »
Hello Everyone,
I started LO on finger foods around 7 months, now all she wants is finger foods. I am looking for some meal ideas that I can make ahead of time and freeze, so all I have to do it pop in the microwave and serve. I am not sure which foods will freeze well or how is best to freeze them, so would love any advice you have.

TIA,
Angie

I wish I had some ideas for you, but I am in the same boat as you :o  dd prefers finger foods so I am always looking for new ideas.

Just wanted to be included in any great ideas you may get.

When Tyler only ate finger foods, I'd steam up a batch of veggies, cut them up, then freeze on a cookie sheet lined with freezer paper. I'd either drop them on the sheet in meal-sized portions or spread them out on the sheet so they wouldn't freeze in a clump and I could just use what I needed later. After they were frozen, I'd put them in a ziploc bag and keep them in the freezer to use later. I remember doing a lot of broccoli, carrots, zucchini, and other veggies. I'd also cut up soft, ripe fruit and do the same thing. If you've introduced pasta, you can also freeze plain cooked pasta.

Ditto what Melissa said!  We have carrot sticks, eggplant sticks, broccoli trees, green beans and watermelon so far.  If you freeze whole plums, when you defrost, drop in water briefly and the skin will peel right off.  It will be mushy (which is perfect  ;) )

Where I live (CA) I can buy a good variety of organic veggies in the frozen section so I use those alot.  I just made ds some chicken apple meatballs today from Annabel Karmel's cookbook and he loved them.

Can you freeze cooked and shredded chicken?  How?

Jenn,
I froze chicken with dd1 and have not done it since.  It seems to dry it out too much.  It may be better to work it into some kind of soup and freezing the batch in cubes.... the chicken pieces (and potatoes and carrots, etc) can then be picked out as finger foods.  Make sense?  HTH
