help with early wake up times & getting on track
« on: July 12, 2006, 02:13:54 am »
Hello.  My DS is 12 weeks old and is on a 3.5-4 hour EASY.  He spits up all the time (even if I wait 4 hours to feed him) and sometimes will only nurse on one side before spitting up.  My question is this:  He seems to wake up each day between 6 and 6:30.  I'm not ready for this to be the start of the day.  7:30 or 8:00 would be much preferred  :).  So how do I get him on track with that?  Some posts I read said to feed them at 6:00 and then wake them at 7:30/8:00 and feed again.  However, if I tried to feed him after only 2 hours, he would get a real upset tummy and spit up EVERYTHING.  I'm also having trouble getting him to bed earlier than 9:00 and would like that earlier.  Here's what he currently does during the day:
6:30 eat - wants to go right back to sleep or can only stay awake until 7:30 if kept up
9:30/10:00 eat
11:30 - 1:30 sleep
1:30 eat
3:30 - 5:15 nap
5:15 eat
6:45 nap (only 30-45 minutes because I wake him up)
7:45 bedtime routine
8:15 eat
8:45 bed - but he has been pretty fussy the last few nights and it has taken a while to get him down

Any suggestions on how to get a better routine without making his eat times sooner than 3.5 hours?  Thanks!

I'm sorry you haven't had any replies.  I'll bump this up to see if it helps.

My thoughts were that at his age, he's probably naturally hungry after 10 hrs and thus needs a feed at 6:30.  Have you tried just giving him a light feed, and then finishing it around 7:30?  His late bedtime may be due to a late nap in the afternoon.  For how long does he sleep when he goes back down after the 6:30 feed?

I agree that you need to wake your LO in the morning if you want to achieve an earlier bedtime (and still be able to fit in enough naps).  Am I reading right that she goes back to sleep after her 6.30 feed and then doesn't wake until 9.30?  If so then she's sleeping over 12 hours at night which is fab but we just need to shift the times about to suit you better.  I would give a full feed when she wakes at 6/6.30 and then a small top-up feed when you wake her at 7.30 to enable you to stay on track with your feeds for the rest of the day.  I imagine you'd then be looking at a 7/7.30 bedtime.  The alternative is to give a light feed at 6/6.30 to see her through until 7.30 but you might find it more difficult to get her back to sleep if she's not full enough.
