fireplace childproofing?
« on: July 06, 2006, 18:48:54 pm »
Hello, I'm looking for something for my fireplace hearth (it's stone) and unless I want a whole cover for $80, I need to get one with adhesive.  has anyone had these adhesive ones for their stone/brick hearth and did the adhesive stay on the stone or were you able to get it off/how?

TIA

Hi,

I'm not 100% sure about the cove/adhesiver you're talking about. However, I've seen a baby gate type of thing set up around the hearth to block it. It kind of looked like a bunch of baby gates attached together, KWIM? I've seen a contraption like this that was an outdoor playpen and it might be the same thing, just rearranged into a semi-circle type of shape. Here's a link to show you what I mean. Don't know if it would work, but it might give you some ideas.

We have a 15 foot fireplace (1960's monstrosity which is on the list of things to get rid of!), Jack fell last summer and split his head open on it - very scary - could see his skull, 999 etc etc. Fortunately he was fine, but will be scarred for life.

Anyway, because of the position/size of ours I couldn't find a guard that would work, so I bought 8 cheap cushions and just laid them over the hearth. And after a couple of days of the kids throwing them round the room they've completely ignored them! They work perfectly (and have saved us on a couple of occasions!)

Worth a try?? Look a lot more pleasing also!

hi,
I read once in a baaby mag that you can take foam pool noodles and cut them open lengthwise and tape with 2 sided tape around fireplace mantels etc.  THat way if your lo falls it would be a soft landing.  To get the tape residue off later use WD40 (what you use to oil squeeks) and it takes it right off.
