Hi, I started giving my son the training cup since he was 6 months. However, I did the mistake of allowing him to play with it (he liked to hold the handles with both hands and hit the table with the cup). After several times, I tried to stop the habit. Each time I tried to make him hold the cup and put him in his mouth (instead of hiting the table)he cried, of course, but I gave him a spoon instead, and give him sips of water in the meanwhile. Later I tried to give him formula on the cup, and not on the bottle. Since that day, he only takes a few oz, but refuses to take more, so I have to continue with the bottle, if I want him to finish his milk.
Now he drinks water from his cup, but I have to hold the cup. He doesnt want to hold it, if he does, he immediatly starts playing with it. What can I do so he starts holding it himself? Or how does it work with a training cup?
I have no clue what can I do to help him to realize that the cup is not a toy!
EAch time I am on his back, holding his hands and position them on the handles, and slowly, trying to put the cup on his mouth. But each time he just want to hit the table. Waht can I do?

Does any one can give me a hint?

He's still pretty young, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. Keep in mind that what looks like "playing" with the cup to you is actually learning to him. He'll eventually learn to use the cup properly, but until then it's okay to let him play with it and figure it out how it works on his own.

Tyler hardly drank anything from the sippy until after we phased out bottles, then it really seemed to "click" for him. We had to hold the cup like a bottle at first, then his independence started to kick in and he wanted to do it himself. He'll come around, just be patient and let him learn!

I agree with Melissa.  Playing is how babies learn ;D.

I think he is doing great with it.  It seems that he understand how to drink out of it and really that is more than half of the battle.

good to hear that his behaviour is normal. I thought it was not a big deal, but then I read about babies who manage to drink for the cup very easy. I though I was doing something wrong. I is amazing how easy we can overload ourself with "pressure" in order to be the best mom. I guess I just have to take it easy  ;)
I can honestly say that Daniel is just a great baby, and I feel bless to have him. On the other hand, it was a bless that my sister recommended me Tracy's book. I have follow her advises most of the time, and it feels very good to know that DAniel is doing great: sleeping with no problems, eating "con gusto", playing on his own, and in general, being such a happy baby.  ;D ;D. EASY really works!

thanks for yous comments! I am really relief!
