Problem in the total opposite direction of last issue!
« on: July 17, 2006, 23:14:06 pm »
I recently posted about Nathan drinking WAY too much milk.

Well, we got the hard spout Nuby's and put away his "babba's", the soft spout Nuby's, on Sat.  Since then the most he has drank was 8 ounces a day! :o

So he went from 40-50 ounces to 8.  He doesn't get calcium from anything else - he'll only eat cheese in Mac and cheese, no yogurt, no green leafy veggies.

I'm teetering on switching back to the old cups...I've just been told, or read, can't remember, that the soft spouts are worse for their teeth and speech, and they shoudl be using hard spout sippy's, or cups with no lids.  He'll drink water from a regular cup, no milk.

What would you do?  Would you switch back?  Or persist?

i'd leave it at least a week as if you swap back after a couple of days it will only be harder later, he has to get used to it, I'd just keep offering him milk when ever you can.
A few days with lower calcium won't make a huge difference... I have days when I struggle to get Aiden to take more than 1 serve of dairy & then days when he will eat so much... my golden rule... look at everything over a week.

E did the same thing when we switched to sippies (although it was from bottles) it did take him a bit to get his comsumption back up but he eventually did(I can't rememberhow long though).

IMO I would persist if you really want to change the cups.

That's the thing, I'm not sure if it's worth it to switch.  Is there really a difference between a soft spout and hard spout?  Their both shaped the same, one is just made of laytex like material, like a bottle nipple.

The soft spout's cup actually is shaped more like a bottle, and I think my personal "embarrassment" if you can call it that, is coming into play when I give him a "bottle" in public.

Geez, I really wish I knew what the right thing to do was.  I don't want him to go off milk because of my personal feelings - I want to be making the right decision, but I don't know how to really find out if there is a difference in the spouts.

kwim?

Will he use a straw cup?  Then you could stop using a sippy all together.

I prefer the hard spout sippy myself cause I found that B will only chew on the soft one and rarely suck but will always suck on the hard one.

He does have one straw cup, but believes that he has to tip it to get water out, and causes quite the mess ;D

I guess I'll leave it a few more days, and see if he comes around.  Otherwise, I might switch back until he gets calcium from somewhere else, or can understand the "big boy" cup concept.
