When did your toddler learn to pedal a trike?
« on: July 12, 2006, 06:27:03 am »
My mom wants to buy my ds a tricycle for his 2nd birthday.  I was wondering if that might be too early for him to be able to pedal and get too frustrated.  I would love to see when other children learned how to pedal a trike.  He is 22 months now and easily frustrated when he can't make things work.

hi there we brought a proper bike for our lo last year on her 2nd birthday.you might think silly but my dh does not like spending money on something if it wont last.and we looked at a lot of small trikes and they all seemed small, and he thought they wouldnt last very long.well she loved it its a first bike from age 2 to 5.she was riding it properly after about 6 weeks.but she just liked the fact that she didnt have a babies bike.i dont think it takes them long when they have the bike in front of them all the time.oh and iexpect him to go backwards first thats what they all do.my lo will be 3 now next week and her bike already looks too small we need to put seat up for her.

My ds is two and a half years and has been pedalling his trike for about a month now.

My ds got one for his 2nd birthday and even though he could reach the pedals fine (we got one that was good for 18mths-4yrs) he didn't really get the whole thing until around 2.5. He rides is heaps now at just over 3. The carrier in the back has been invaluable and made it a more useful toy than just being a trike as he loads in his toys, fills it with dirt or water, rides dd around in it (supervised  ;)).

My ds will be 3 later this month & he has on occasion used the pedals, but rarely does, I think part is his trike is quite stiff, but also he says "i like using my feet Mummy"

Hmm, good question.

DD got a trike for Xmas, but has not used it much since, partly because she hasn't yet learnt to pedal, mind you she always has been slow on the physical side of things, takes after me!!!

Harrison has one of those trikes with the handle on the back - so you can push too. I wheel him down to the shops on it! He can push the pedals round, so he gets the idea to some extent - especially downhills! LOL! He loves it, and I am sure will be cycling by himself within the next few months - so i would say 2nd birthday is a perfect time - but get a parent friendly one!

DS has had a tricycle for over a year now and up until about a month ago would only use his feet to push him along. He has just recently learned to pedal with his feet.

We had a trike when ds was about 4 months old ::)  That's dh for ya! ;)

The winter before he turned 2 (birthday is in Feb) we had the trike in the house, and worked on learning how to ride it.  We'd put his feet on the pedals, and push him a bit, so he could see how his feet moved around in circles to make the bike go.  By January, a month before his 2 year old birthday, he was riding his trike like a gangbuster!!!  Of course, until he got outside with it, he did still use it as a manual push bike...know what i mean?  Like Fred Flintstone.

But this spring when we got outside, say April (?), he rides it up and down the sidewalk and we can barely keep up with him! ;D

Long story short, yes, get it!! ;D ;D
