When did you start on meat?

My 6 1/2 mo ds has been eating solid food for 2 months and has been eating 2 meals per day for about 2 weeks.  He eats cereal and fruit after his first nap at 10:30-11AM and then he eats two or three veggies at 5-5:30PM.  I am wondering when you started feeding your dc meat?  I read in one book 6 months, another 7 and still another 8 months.  Also, I am not sure that I really want to give my ds that stuff in a jar and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions - do I just Cuisinart plain chicken, beef and pork?

Also, when do you go to three meals and would you suggest that I start with a feeding in the morning but keep the other times the same?

I tried to start with chicken at about 7 months and meat about 8 but had success with neither until about 9 or maybe even 10. I homemade so did stews and pureed them with lots of veg which dd already liked. To get her to eat chicken I copied a jar recipie and added apricot and a tiny spoon of natural yogurt and after the first few times just went to plain chicken.  I  think it takes a while to adapt to a stronger taste. I would also give my protein meal at lunchtime.

So leave the dinnertime with just veggies and incorporate the meat into lunchtime.

When do I need to go to three meals a day?

My ds loves his fruits and veggies, so I'm hoping mixing the meats/chicken with the veg will help.

To be honest dd was on 3 meals a day by that stage, I would leave protein for lunchtime as in meat as it may be a bit harder to digest. There really is no huge rush with breakfast and just realised you are only on 2 meals for about 2 weeks so maybe just wait a little longer another 2 or 3 weeks and see how it goes.

Okay, thanks for the advice.  DS just started sleeping through the night (okay, so he woke up last night at 4AM, buit we held tough and didn't give him a bottle), so I think your advice of waiting 2 weeks before starting to incorporate the third meal is right on.

We started meat at about 7 months I think, but we started solids at 4.5 months. I think was on 3 meals/day by then, or was close. Hard to remember even though it wasn't all that long ago! Here's a link to a past thread that might help you as well.

I think my lo was on three meals a day by about 7 months..she eats anything. I haven't given her pork yet and didn't start chicken until she was 9 months old as directed by my doc. She has had beef now..meats were a slow start for her..mostly because I was nervous about hte texture..now I shred it and she loves it!!

I've read everything from 6-9 mths for starting meat. My ped told us to start recently and dd was 7.5 months, she said babies need protein at this point regardless of being formula or bf'd. I started with beans and chickpeas (protein and fibre) and then went to chicken and now beef. I tried the jars of meat and it's pretty gross- looks and smells like cat food. I boil the meat and then put through the food processor with some of the water from the boil. It's smooth and pretty plain tasting, I then freeze into cubes. For variety I will add 1/2 cube of a veggie or even mango but I freeze all dd's foods as one flavour, plain so that we can mix at the meal time for variety.

If you do use the jars I would stick with the plain meats vs. the mixes ie. pasta with chicken, veggies with turkey, etc. This way they get the most protein and you can add what you want. Oh, my ped also told me to use dark meat for chicken vs. white as it's higher fat and calories for the los.
