Bobbing On and Off!
« on: July 18, 2006, 21:01:20 pm »
My 9wk old DS, who has been a great breastfeeder from day 1, has recently started to fight my nipple and bob on and off after about 10 minutes of feeding (usually 20 mins per feed). He has reflux and will often (over the last 4 weeks or so) start to cry when he bobs off the breast, but stop as soon as he gets back on. This only happens during daytime feeds.

He has also started to gaze 'lovingly' at me whilst on/off the breast and will try to 'talk' whilst feeding. I have tried to ignore him and not engage him but its difficult when he is so cute ;-)

Any ideas on why he might be doing this, or how to stop it? Would like to get him back to eating effectively.

Its so cute when they try to smile/laugh and nurse at the same time!  ;D Has you letdown slowed down? Some babes will get frustated with a slow let-down and bob on/off. Sometimes the side laying position will help. Is he frustated adn bob on/off...or is it a new trick he has learned?

My DD started doing the same thing at about 3 month old.  She would sometimes get herself very worked up crying.  I found that if I switched breasts, she stopped crying and fed well.  I am not sure why this worked.  These days (she is almost five months), she will bob off and on because she is too busy looking around at everything around her.  I find that if I gently cradle her head and support my breast, she will focus her attention on the task at hand!

Okay, I could have written the original post!!  My 9 week old DD has been bobbing off and on, but instead of a slow letdown, I have a very fast one...she normally sputters and chokes when she feeds b/c it comes so fast, and it's been no problem, but now suddenly, she will scream and refuse to go back on....I have tried the switching sides thing and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  She did the same thing tonight with DH when he gave her a bottle, so I'm not sure what's going on with her!!

Yep, my little one has reflux...was diagnosed with it 2 weeks ago...the medicine (Zantac) seemed to be working so not sure why these issues are still happening! :(

Here are some tips on forceful let-down. I really had one early on and although strange at first- the position seemed to work.

My 11 week DD bobs as well, and usually during her last feed for the day.  I was worried it was because I didn't have enough milk or a slow let-down, as you all suggested.  So...since she is sleeping through the night (yay!) and I am usually extra full in the morning, I'll pump after she eats and use that at night to feed her once she starts bobbing.  I think it helps her sleep more hours too, because she is probably getting more calories since it is mostly hindmilk.
