Why do we have breastmilk alchohol screening ads?
« on: July 19, 2006, 16:09:13 pm »
Perhaps this is more of a debate issue, hopefully not -- but it really bothers me that we have ads on this site for Breastmilk Alcohol Screening. YOU ARE BREASTFEEDING!!! What are you doing drinking so much alcohol that you need to screen it? :(  "They" say that one OCCASSIONAL glass of wine is fine, isn't that enough? Why the need to get drunk on a regular basis (I'm assuming that buying a machine to screen your milk for alcohol implies you plan to use if often).

Am I the only one bothered by this? :( :(

Yikes
I've not seen that one.
I would agree that someone who drinks regularly enough to need the product may not be within the 'normal' confines of most breastfeeding mums!!! (I'm trying to stay polite here about a product from our 'sponsors'!!)

The ads are our life-line for keeping this site up and running even if people don't buy from them but just click on them. Things are very tight at the moment hence the requests for people to donate too and buy pixels. I will certainly pass on your concerns to admin. about that particular ad.
Thanks.

Never saw the ad but it does seem odd.

Didn't know bout us getting paid for ads.  All we have to do is click is it?

As it is against googles terms and conditions for us to discuss the ads in any way that would encourage visitors to click for no purpose other than to collect revenue for the site, then suffice to say that if something takes your fancy go have a look :)

As for those ads that are contentious and against BW methods then we can filter them out.  On this occasion as the ad is not in conflict with BW methods I will wait until there are further complaints before I ask Andy to filter it.  If you object to this particular ad, then state "I object" and nothing more, debate is not necessary.  If there are enough objections I will get it filtered.

:)

I understand..... and honestly, when it comes down to it, I don't object to the ad itself, as a consumer I have the right to not click, right? The ad itself is not offensive (I should have worded my subject line differently).

My issue is more with the fact that the product exists in the first place. It bothers me that women who breastfeed are getting drunk because even if her next feeding is dumped, there will be trace amounts of alcohol in the next several feeds.. :( Having the ad or not having the ad is not going to change that. Unfortunately. This is probably exactly what you are saying we should *not* discuss though. :) Sorry.

While I am saddened that there is a need for such a product, perhaps it is good because then the moms who are making such choices will see the effects in their breast milk and won't just rationalize that they didn't drink enough to have an effect on the baby.  This way they'll see concretely the effects and know to pump and dump.  Perhaps to make the choice not to bf and drink anymore if it puts baby at risk.  Just a different opinion.  Laurie
