when does LO transition to food before bottle?
« on: July 21, 2006, 17:16:19 pm »
Hi ladies...wondering if you can help me understand when LOs transition to food before bottle?  And how does that effect her daily routine?  Am I supposed to feed her at the time she normally took the bottle, or wait until when she was normally having food?  Is it then that LOs are on 3 meals a day?  Also, should she have regular snack times?  Grandma (DH's mom) watches DD while we're at work, and I've noticed that she's going through Cheerios like they're nothin'!  I really want her to snack on something a bit better, like fruits and veggies, but I'm afraid that if I don't give her specific instructions, she's going to overfeed her!  AAHHH!!!!   >:(

Cayden is a couple days shy of  7 & 1/2 months old and her routine is as follows -

6:45am - awake
7:00am - 6-6.5 oz. bottle formula
7:45am - 2.5 T cereal + 2.5 T fruit / veggie
9:00am - nap (usually 1 - 1.5 hours)
11:00am - 6-8 oz. bottle formula
11:45am / 12:00pm - 2.5 T fruit or veggie
1:00pm - nap (usually 1.5 - 2 hours)
3:00pm - 6-8 oz. bottle formula
3:45pm / 4:00pm - 2.5 T fruit or veggie
6:00pm - bath
6:45pm / 7:00pm - 7-8 oz. bottle
7:15pm / 7:30pm - down for the night

Thanks SO much for your help!!!  At times like these I really wish babies came with instruction manuals!   ;)

It was 5 years ago but i gave solids first all the time when I was feeding DS1 solids, except at breakfast where he had an early morning feed an hour or so before.

It's really up to you when you switch to solids first because different things work for different babies. It's important for formula to be her main source of nutrition for several more months, so however you can get that to happen is fine! We did breast/bottle first until Tyler transition to whole milk and the sippy cup at 1 yr...it was just easier that way to ensure he wasn't filling up on solids.

There's really no need for snacks at that age unless she seems extra hungry. When solids and bottles are spaced out, it's almost as if one of those is a snack of sorts, KWIM? If you wanted to try and fit snacks into the day, just keep an eye on formula intake and make sure snacks aren't filling her up too much.
