are the night wakings starting to be a habit?
« on: July 25, 2006, 13:31:01 pm »
Hi ds is 11 weeks old this week.  He is on 3 hour EASY.  He wakes at 7am and bf every 3 hours from there.  He gets three 1.5 hour naps (hopefully ;)) and a catnap starting between 5:30 and 6:00.  He is in bed at 8, gets a df (formula from dh) at 10:30.
Then he always wakes up between 1:30 and 2:30 and between 4:30 and 5:30.  For the past few nights, it has been exactly 1:45 and 5:00.  I have half heartedly tried to put him back to sleep without feeding him and sometimes it works for about 45 mintues and then he is back up.  He does eat if I feed him, but it doesn't seem like a full feed.  The 2 am feeding is definitely more then the 5:00 feeding.  In Tracy's book, she says that at this age they shouldn't need the 2 am feeding and that if they wake the same time every night it is a habit and to try W2S.  What do you think about this in my case?  He still seems young to me to drop that feed, but I don't want to reinforce a bad habit that will be hard to get rid of later.
The other thing is that at the df, he usually only takes 3 to 4 ounces.  Don't know if this is enough but he won't seem to take anymore then that.

Thanks, Kim

If he is waking again within and hour then he is hungry. ;D

B was having a feed at night up until he was 6 months old.  Not all babies can go without at night this early.  Just follow his cues and if he seems hungry then feed him.

I figured he needed the dreamfeed and at least one more feeding but I wasn't sure about still needing 2.  Tracy seems to really believe that they don't need that 2 am feeding at this age if they are eating well during the day, so I just wanted to make sure I wasn't reinforcing a bad habit.  It is so hard to tell when bf, b/c you don't know if they are doing it for comfort or they need to eat.
Thanks

It IS hard to tell sometimes! But, every LO is different so don't be afraid to go with the flow. My DS had a night feed until he was 6.5 and he had more than one night feed longer than most. Actually it seems that many LOs around here have a night feed until at least 6 months. You'll know when/if it becomes a habit and it's not needed anymore. He'll eat more slowly and take less and generally not be that interested.

Thanks, I guess Tracy makes it sound so black and white, I thought I was doing something wrong.  I do remember when Frankie was 4 months old, he was still waking for the 4 am feed but he would barely eat anything and he would stay awake for a long time. That was when I knew he was ready to give it up.
The other thing that had me confused was that he was only waking 2 times before we estabished the df and now he is still waking up 2 more times even with it.  Go figure!

Thanks. Kim

Bram was the same with the DF.  He still woke at the same time, so where he was going from 9-3 at first when we started the DF he was going 11-3.    Have you tried not doing it?  I think that with some little ones it really doesn't extend night sleep.

I haven't tried not doing it, maybe I will try that for a few nights.
Thanks
