How much to give at dreamfeed and through night
« on: July 25, 2006, 21:10:27 pm »
My baby is 9 weeks old and he seems always hungry.  I'm wondering how much I should give him at his dreamfeed and when he wakes in the night?  He currently has 150-200ml through the day.  He has about 6-7 feed through a 24 hour period.  My plunket nurse says that they should be doing four hourly feeds from around 12 weeks!! (At the moment is is still 3 hourly, sometimes less).  Also, he has reflux so is on thickened formula which seems to help.
Any tips would be helpful.
Thanks
Kirsten

My DS also has reflux and is only managing 3 hourly feeds most of the time. Most feeds he is only taking 3 or 4 oz a time therefore he is likely to remain on this schedule until he can manage more.  Re: dreamfeed some times he will take 3 oz, sometimes 5/6oz then his middle on the night feed he will take the same.

Normally he has 1 good feed a day of 5/6oz and this is either the dream feed or the middle of the night one, because he is more relaxed he can take more.

So I would say go with what makes him happy

To be honest there is no 'set' amount that I can suggest you offer. I beleive most mums/dads make up a bottle and just offer it to the LO, you LO will let you know when you have had enough.   More DF info here --> https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=54662.0

Secondly, you should just progress to a 4hr EASY at your LO's pace, in my experrience nurses usually give a broad spec answer when question them on feeding etc. Just remember all LO's are different and YOU know your LO best. I have never heard of any guidelines that state a LO should be suddenly on 4hr feeds at 12 months.

Tracy says 4 months and under = 3hr EASY, 4 months and over = 4month EASY, however she does state this is a guideline only.  Usually from her observations LO's either made the transistion themselves at approx 4 months or they displayed the signs of wanting to change at approx. 4 months.  Some babies stay on 3.5hr EASY well into their 7th ot 8th Month.  Here is more info on the transistion --> https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=63161.0

Don't feel under any pressure to change, if you know your Lo is not ready.
