Is DS to young for 1 nap?
« on: July 27, 2006, 11:33:17 am »
Hi all,

We've been going through a stage where DS won't go to bed at night without a battle and so we found that we where extending bedtime to later and later because he just wasn't tired, but in the last week I've found that DS has not needed the am nap he can manage from 7:30/8:00 til 12:00/12:30 then have a 2 to 3hour nap and then he is fine until 7 when he goes to bed for the night, I seem to have a much happier bubba on my hands because he is ready for bed when he is put down and he is sleeping for longer at night. This is our old nap routine      Wake 6:30/7:00
                                                   Nap 10:00 til 11:30
                                                   Nap 1:00 til 3:00
Bed 7:00  but was getting later and later some nights was 8:30

our new routine is                          Wake 7:30/8:00
                                                   Nap 12:00 til 2:30/3:00
                                                   Bed 7:00

He is having 1/2 hour less nap everyday but doesn't get stressed at bedtime my question really is, is this ok or is he too young?

So your DS is only 9.5 months old?

It's really very young and quite unusual, but if it's working for you and he then no need to stress. Just keep an eye on things to make sure he doesn't get too overtired or start having night wakings.

Thanks for the reply, I was a bit worried bc he's so young but he's done it himself really, yesterday i was out shopping with him from 9 til 12 ish and normally he would sleep in the car and in his pushchair but he stayed awake the whole time and only fell asleep on the way home.

I think my DD is trying to make this transition at 10 months (so a little older than your LO but still pretty young compared to when my DS did). We have roughly the same routine as you but on days at the moment with only 1 nap she practically falls asleep at the dinner table. We do eat around 6pm which is the problem, but if she falls asleep then or catnaps she only sleeps for 10-30 minutes the bedtime hers and mine gets very late. I have also found that her one nap is more restorative than 2 naps even if the sleeping-time works out as shorter over the day.

For us I am thinking it could just be a phase because she is finding everything so interesting - crawling/big brother/whatever - she can't wind-down like she used to until she is really exhausted, even when out in the buggy.

my neice dropped to 1 nap at 9.5mo... My SIL thought it was because they made a trip to see my ds after he was born & it messed his routine, but she kept it up until she dropped all naps at 2years old. now at 3 yrs 9mo, she sleeps 2 hours less than the average for her age. but my brother also dropped to 1 nap at 11 months old & my mum says really he wanted to do that earlier, but her books said 1year... so she kept trying 2 naps.
If he is going about 3hours during the day & close to 12.5/13 overnight then let him as he is getting more than average sleep even if it is not average nap amount for his age... I am soooo envious

My dd dropped to one nap very easily at 10mths - so I think it's definitely possible. I'd give it a go and if it doesn't help you can always reinstate another nap. The other thing is, that transition can take quite a while (it was hard for my ds to transition and took about 4mths) - so it may work temporarily or you may have some days of one nap and some days of two naps.

my spirited dd  switched to 1 nap at 10.5 - 11mo  and was SO much happier on it. i think spirited ones thrive on the early switch

As a suggestion - You could always put him down for afternoon nap and wake him after 1/2 hour.
