Long flight with 10month son, what food should I bring?
« on: July 28, 2006, 05:25:57 am »
Hi dear, please help me with this.... :(

I'm taking 11 hours flight with my son from Hongkong to NewZealand. Which means I need to bring some food for his three meals. I have no idea what food is better to bring in the plane....can I just frozen the food and heat it in the Mircowave?  Any idea for that?

thanx a lot....

Oh gosh, I'm trying to think of what I'd do if I were in that situation. I'd try to pack dry foods or stuff that can be eaten cold but doesn't spoil too quickly without refrigeration. That would pretty much mean mostly carbs, but everything else can be made up after the flight, right? I would never have thought about having access to a microwave. Do they let you do that on airplanes?

Foods I'd probably bring:

- Sandwiches ... basically bread with a spread inside like jam, peanut butter, etc.
- Cereals such as "O" ceceals (like Cheerios), Corn Flakes, Rice Krispies
- Gerber Veggie Puffs
- Gerber Fruit Puffs
- Yams or Sweet Potato  ... this is my usual "take with me" food anyways, since it seems to keep ok in my diaper bag for a while. Cook, cube, refrigerate.
- Nutrigrain bars ... easy to carry. :)
- Crackers
- Rice Cakes ... another plus is that it keeps LO occupied for a while. ;)

- Fruits that keep well "open" or chopped up. So bananas would be out.  Maybe grapes, peaches, nectarines, mango, cantalope, honeydew, applesauce (not cut up apple, though, turns brown :( ), strawberries, blueberries, cherries, orange, tomato.

- Not sure about veggies, but if you have access to a microwave, or can warm in hot water, then maybe some cooked veggies

- Cut up cheese cubes, but I'd feed at first meal before they get too warm/old/icky.

I just thought of this... I've been assuming that your LO is sorta eating solids. Is he? I may have misunderstood you to mean he's eating pureed or jar baby food. Sorry about that.

Marie's post is great and I plan to go with that sort of thing for our flight from Seattle to the UK in a month with DD who will be 11 months. She mostly eats family meals at home but I don't think I really want her to be eating airline meals... although DS (2.5 years) will be having the children's meal along with endless supplies of healthy snacks  ;) like he did on the way here. So I am also going to take a few jars - though I have not found any decent stage 3/toddler jars yet - any suggestions?

Do they have children's meals on airlines? I didn't know that. The last time I flew on a plane was pre-baby.

I suppose you can look over the menu to see if anything comes with something "easy" for LO to eat, like pasta or rice, then LO can also nibble off your plate. If they're serving hamburger (they like to call it "salisbury steak"  ;) ) or meatloaf, you can cut it up and give it to LO since it's pretty easy for them to manage in the mouth.

Also, if it's cumbersome to bring fresh fruit to cut up, you can always buy those individual fruit cup packages that they sell in stores. It  would be a  lot easier to pack.

We flew from the East Coast United States to West Coast Canada when our son was 11.5 months (with tons of layovers) and we found it helpful to freeze little containers of applesauce.  The applesauce kept the other food chilled and then later in the day, ds had cold applesauce (once it thawed) to eat.

In otherwords, you can use the frozen applesauce (or any other fruit) as the ice packs.  Less to carry!

Would go with frozen meals and have them defrost slowly, did this when I travelled last year and this year with dd but cooked her pasta just before I left the house. Had a cooler bag with small ice pack in it. The other thing to go with is cereal, like ready brek or weetabix just make sure you can get milk, I know sounds easy but try in the airport to buy a glass of milk, did a lot of them last year with dd and was maybe just very unlucky. Then you only have to worry about 1 meal.
Also agree with cheese cubes, cold meats if in a cooler bag, turkey, ham, salami, and also crackers. Bring your own crackers with you, asked for some on take off last month and they gave us the nibbly things they give adults with their apperatif  :-[

when I flew with my DD from Italy to Australia and that is a 21 hour flight plus times in airport i took jar food and i took rusk biscuits.

I am going in end of October from Spain to Australia and this will be 21 hours plus alot of time in airport and this time I will be taking jar food, formula and dry biscuits.Plus my DD who will be 5now and my Ds who will be 10.5months.

I find in trips that long, when you are carrying nappies, extra clothes etc you don't want to carry to much extra food. Also not sure of New Zealand but into Australia opened food has to be inspected and they do throw it away. Also milk in bottles too,so you don't want to carry too much and get it thrown away.
I found my DD slept alot of the way,so I had too much jar food, but having Jar food is easy convenient and less stressing carrying too much stuff.

There is alot to think about with kids...
Also depending when you fly back if your child is over one and having normal food order a child's meal or you will end up with baby jar food...You normally have to order this before you get to the airport.

Have a good trip :D
Andrea...

No time to read the other responses, so sorry if this is a repeat.

Gerber (US brand, sorry if not available to you) makes freeze dried corn, apples, and strawberry and bananas.  They are real fruit and do not have sugar or anything in them, so it makes you feel less guitly.   :D

Good luck!!!

I've just flown Korea - Australia.
I usually make my own food for my 8 mth old.  However, for the flight I took jarred organic food (gave baby a trial run a few days earlier to check she liked it) and threw away what she didn't eat.  This was just sooo much easier, and cleaner (fed straight from the jar so only dirty spoons to carry).    We flew JAL, and they were really good - they had jarred purrees for babies of carrot and potato, and rice crackers for babies on board (although I didn't use them as had my own).
In terms of quantities - take what you would normally use, and one or two extra in case of delays.  For bottle feeding I made up the bottles in advance and  I took 1 xtra bottle on board, and an extra 3 quantities of formula powder for delays.

Just make sure you throw away opened food before entering NZ or else you'll be fined.

A couple of extra things I found really useful during the flight (Korea - Aussie is 12 hours) was the Baby Bjorn or similar front carrying pack, if your baby will still fit it.
Lily wouldn't settle during the flights although she didn't cry - she just wouldn't sleep due to all the action going on around her.  The Baby Bjorn was fantastic - hubby spent literally hours walking her around the plane, she had a great time, kept her amused.
Friends of mine who regularly travel 12 hour flights from Korea and who's babies are 10 mths plus (ie, too big for the bassinnett) swear by taking the baby's car seat and putting it onto the airline seat - baby is safe and relatively comfy.
Also, try not to take toys that rattle or make noise, deeply annoying to those around you esp during a night flight.
And of course feed by breast/bottle or use pacifier during take off and descent.
And of course several sets of clothes and bibs, and a large packet of wipes!
And take the stroller right to the gate and pick to up when you arrive at the other end
I'm sure this is all stuff you either know or have thought of but it may be useful to someone.

To lilys mum

Can I take the stroller to the gate? is there any limitation for the stroller size? That will be much earier for me to carry bryan to the gate..coz hongkong airport is huge..
