If she wakes up again after going back to sleep then she is likely hungry. Also, LOs usually have a coughlike quality to their cry when they're hungry.

My LO usually wakes up around 3:30, settles herself back to sleep and wakes up half to one hour later, cooing. (She seldom cries for hunger, cooing is actually her language.) So, instead of waiting her to wake up fully... I DF (2-3oz) her once she's settled back to sleep. It worked....
