Too much fruit?!?
« on: July 29, 2006, 20:16:06 pm »
Does anyone know if there's any issues with lo's eating lots of fruit?

DD really likes fruit - especially grapes & will eat it over most anything.  We're still transitioning from baby food to all table food (now it's a mix, since she spits out lots of table foods).  So, she'll eat baby food fruit, mixed with oatmeal, and chunks of fruit as a finger food.

The reason I ask is because she has a HORRIBLE diaper rash right now.  She has pretty sensitive skin & the pedi said months ago that she has ezcema.  We've been using a prescription cream on her butt for months & it's usually ok - but the past few days it's worse than ever.  Her poops have been lighter in color too & soft, but not diarrhea.

Someone told me it may be from eating too much fruit.... or a new food that doesn't agree with her.  The only new thing she's eaten this past week is plums (in baby food), but she's eaten prunes before & aren't they the same thing?  :-\

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me!!

Lots of fruit can cause pretty yucky poops and diaper rash too. Plums and prunes are the same fruit, but in a different form, IYKWIM. Since plums aren't dried, I'd imagine they're more acidic than prunes, so that could be part of the problem.

It could be from too much fruit. Slightly OT, but the other thing also is, is to make sure she rinses her mouth with a few sips of water after eating it to wash the sugar from her teeth. As far as prunes, ff you check the packaging, it probably has other additives (I don't have any to check) so they're not straight fruit the same as plums - so it could be that too, also dried fruit is highly concentrated in sugar. Both my kids are huge fruit eaters too and I notice my ds's poops suffer a bit when he's had too much - he's toilet trained now, but it does give him a stingy bum when I wipe him, so imagine if it was done into a nappy still it would give him a rash (he suffered terribly prior).

Sorry to butt in but, Nikki, you said rinse her mouth with water.  My DS eats baby food fruit in the mornings and sometimes afternoons, he has 1 tooth crowning. Should I be giving him water too to wash down the sugar?

Hi, I think it's a good habit to get into just to wash extra food out of the mouth in general after eating - so yep, now is a good time to start. I'm not anal about it, but I do encourage it when I think of it - most times they like to have a drink after eating anyhow.

Thanks Melissa & Nikki!

I'm so baffled about what to do....  She loves fruit so much, and won't eat a lot of other foods.  Why can't she some more table foods?!?  ::)

The rash is starting to look more yeasty (is that a word?) tonight.  Is there a yeast/fruit connection or can a regular rash just become yeast?

Any ideas on foods to "stop her up" a bit?  When she poops everything gets worse & it would be good to give her butt a break!  I believe bananas, rice & bread are supposed to be good.  Any other ideas?

Thanks for reading this & sorry for all the gross questions!  :-[

Well candida/thrush is fed by sugar...so maybe there is a connection? If it were me, I'd probably cut all fruit out except a few different types and do like an elimination to see if it's maybe just a certain type of fruit that's doing it. Apple is also part of the BRAT diet and meant to stop them up a bit (never happened here though...). Maybe do a google on low sugar type fruits and see how you go.
