What toys do your 18-24mo play with?
« on: July 31, 2006, 00:43:27 am »
Okay, we've hit the rainy season here in Malaysia and I'm stuck indoors with my 19mo who is teething and the clingiest child on the block!!  ::)

Since turning 18 months, he's suddenly so skillful with his little fingers that he takes a couple of minutes to finish off his toys, e.g. shape sorters, stacking pails, blocks, etc. So, he goes through them FAST and then throws them back into the toy box and doesn't want to look at them again. Sigh. Then he just wants Mommy around him. ACK.

I have 3 boxes of toys that I rotate every day at noon. But he is SO bored. We don't get out much. And I can't spend every waking hour with him because I have a 3mo baby, too.

He doesn't have a problem with independent play time as long as he finds the toy interesting. When baby is napping, I do activities with him, e.g. reading, playing with laundry, drawing, crafty stuff, cleaning floors, etc.

Then I realised that we haven't bought him any new toys since his 1st birthday, and maybe it is time to invest in a few good quality toys?

So PLEASE share with me, what toys do your lo's love? It is sale month and I need to go shopping soon!!  ;D

Does he like physical stuff?  We recently bought a mini jumping castle. Yet to use it (hiding it for christmas) but if he's big on physical stuff and needs wearing out, it's great for indoors (of course you will get sick of the sight of it!).  It's about 1.8metre.

Just turned 2.
Favourites include:
trains, vehicles, painting, felt-tips, soft stuff (play dough) - but not all that is independent I know.
books, play food and toy kitchen, Bob the builder telephone, jigsaws, duplo (lego), wooden blocks, farm animals, aquadraw (drawing with water on a special mat or little cards with things 'hiding' that get revealed by the water).

I was thinking about getting DD some lego but am not sure whether she would like them. She doesn't even stack blocks yet. Is this something all kids eventually grow to like?

That's a tough question about the lego.  I reckon all kids would, especially once they can create things like a house and imagine.  If you do buy and she doesn't like it as she grows, you could always pass it on to someone else.  Here's my address...  ;D

Hi mum101,

What is a mini jumping castle? Sounds like something he would need - he needs to work off a LOT of energy so that he sleeps easily.

And by the way, I LOVE the name Rory!!!  ;D

Marisa's Mom,

I recently bought Caleb those Pop-Ons by Fisher Price. The concept is like Duplos/Legos, but it is age-appropriate for 18M+. And my ds seems to prefer them to Duplos.

The Fisher Price Pop-Ons sound interesting but I can't seem to find any info on them ... couldn't find them on Amazon or Toys R Us. Are they really hard to find?

Dorian LOVES his duplos. He loves to build and destroy.( he learned that from his brother) One of his fav. toys is a weeble wobble tree house.  But i'd have to say a good amount of his time playing he's carrying around a book.  My children LOVE books.

Something he really likes that i haven't bought yet is toy dishes. We participate in parents as teachers and the lady that visits us once a month during the school year brought dishes for dorian to play with. She said it help with imagination play and helps them with colors. And dorian LOVED it.  Now i just have to find some.

Marie,

Maybe you can try this link? I goggled up "Fisher Price Pop Ons" and found this on Amazon.

Hi Jolene - I'll see if I can find a pic of one...
The jumping castle I've got is from "Dora - The Explorer" range of toys. Don't know if you've seen the show.  When it's blown up, it's about 1.8 metre high, by 1.8 wide.  It has 3 sides to it and a base to jump on.  Perfect for one kid, maybe 2.  DD doesn't jump very well yet, but bouncing around on it will be fun.  I plan to give it to her at 2 years.
I've seen mini-trampolines at our toy library which look fun, but i'd want to put huge cushions around the outside so she has a soft place to fall off!  Not at that stage yet though not far away.

I'm glad you like the name Rory!  It's stressful picking out a name! haha  I like that it's easy to spell but not common at the moment.  I still get a bit of confusion from others as it's mainly a boys name... The pharmacist recently thought the prescription I had must have been for my little boy who wasn't with me at the store (but my daughter was there all in pink).  Even though the prescription had 'MISS Rory".   ::)

Jolene, Thanks for the Amazon link, no wonder I couldn't find it. When I was searching on Amazon earlier, I searched as "pop-ons" with an S when I should have searched as "pop-onz" with a Z. Silly search engine can't figure out what I meant.  :P  It doesn't actually come directly from Amazon, it says it's sold by Target, so I will look for them the next time I head over to Target, which shouldn't be too long since I need to pick up more diapers. I really hate to think about how many diapers we've gone through, it's gotta be more than 1,000 by now.
