"Does my formula-fed baby need extra water?"
« on: August 02, 2006, 20:38:59 pm »
Formula-fed babies may occasionally require extra water, especially if the weather is hot and they are more thirsty than usual. It is important that giving water does not replace a milk feed and fill your baby up unnecessarily, so only give small quantities at a time. In babies who are younger than six months old, boil the water first and allow it to cool before offering it to your baby.

Your midwife or health visitor may also advise water if your baby becomes constipated, as extra fluids can help to soften the stools. She may also suggest giving extra water if your baby is ill or feverish and requires re-hydration from a source other than milk.

There are many types of flavoured or plain waters, which are marketed solely for babies and toddlers, but these can be expensive and are not necessary. Cooled boiled tap water is sufficient and if your baby gets used to water rather than juice, she will have a lower chance of tooth decay in the future.
