"How long can I keep formula milk out of the fridge?"

Formula milk should not be left out of the fridge at room temperature for longer than it takes to feed your baby - about one hour -- due to the risk of contamination from bacteria in the air. If you are away from home, however, there are various methods and products available to reduce the likelihood of this happening and give you more flexibility.

There are many ready-to-feed formula milks available on the market that come mixed and sealed and handy for instantly decanting into a sterilised feeding bottle. If your baby will not take milk at room temperature, a travel bottle warmer can be used. Alternatively you could use an easy-mix bottle carrier, with an additional small screw-on container holding the milk powder, to transport just-boiled water. Ideally, the water used to make up feeds needs to be kept at a temperature of 70 degrees C or higher to kill any potentially harmful bacteria. You may then need to cool down your baby's milk to a comfortably warm temperature by holding the bottle under running cold water.
