Losing hair, malnutrition?
« on: August 04, 2006, 20:50:14 pm »
This may sound kind of weird, but I have been losing a lot of hair lately.  Also, I bruise easily.  I take a daily prenatal and eat very healthy.  I am wondering if any other moms are experiencing this?  I am assuming it is because all of my nutrition is going to my lo?  It is just kind of odd.  I know he went through a growth spurt and is taking more oz (according to when I pump), so could that be the result?

Anyone else notice in changes in your body?  My lo is almost 5 mos.  Also, I have lost a few lbs in the last two weeks too (definitely not complaining about that  ;D!).

Thanks,

Jodi

Hi Jodi
I'm losing loads of hair at the minute, and my LO is nearly 5 months too! it also happened to me after DD1, i think it's just down to the fact you don't lose hair when you're pregnant, so it's catching up! i have long black hair, and DH is fed up of finding my hairs everywhere.  As for the bruising, not sure, maybe mention it to your nurse, sometimes people get a bit rundown after having a baby, have you always bruised easily or is ot just recently? It sounds a bit silly but if i'm particularly tried i seem to bruise more (or maybe i'm just clumsier then!)

Hi, Jodi--
Yes.  Like the previous poster said, losing hair a few months post delivery is perfectly normal.  Blame the hormones.  :)  You don't lose it as much when preg, but then you make up for it afterward.

Can't speak to the bruising...  I'm fair complected & have always bruised easily.  If it's different than normal, you may want to call your doc or maybe a nurse's line.

In the US, some insurance companies have nurse lines you can call to get recommendations for what to do about certain conditions.  Look on your insurance card.  Don't know about other countries...  HTH

Wow, fast and efficient responses!  Thank you so much!  I, too, have long, brown hair and my dh thinks something is wrong with me when we wake up in the morning and my hair is all over our white sheets. Yuck!  do you mind telling me how long it took to loose all of that extra hair?

Thanks!

Well i got pregnant again when DD1 was 6.5 months old, so i think the hair loss stopped around then, not sure how long it would've continued. I'll find out this time though cos i've no intention of getting pregnant again that quickly!

HI there Jodi!  :-*

My hair is exactly the same. I literally lose andfuls every day. Poor Kirsten ends up with it wrapped all around her  :-[ . When I have a shower and wash my hair, I block up the plug hole , it is actually pretty disgusting.

Also I have been bruising more recently  too. I just put it down to all the stumbling about in the dark that I do now. Lol all the bruises seem to be on my legs, I must walk into stuff all the time!

HTH   ;D

yip. I lost handfuls of hair when DD was about 4 months (including a few bald spots). I took the opportunity to get a cool short new haircut which i love and the bald spots all have lovely thick new hair about an inch or so long now :)

p.s. i love your lo's Ramones tshirt. DD has a couple of those  :)

HI Maisy!  Fancy meeting you over here!

You're right, now that I think about it, I am much more clumsy! Plust carrying a car seat around with a heavy baby will definitely throw your equilibrium off!  Well, good to know it is normal to loose that much hair.  I would love for it to stop soon, you're right, the shower is gross!

Thanks all,

Jodi

Thanks, tiki_nightmare!  It is hard finding "cool" clothes for my ds.  I bet your dd looks adorable in them!
Also, I may have to consider getting a hair cut... I am starting to get so disgusted!

I too have been losing a ton of hair since my lo was 5 months.  I was losing it so bad I went to the Dr for it.  I mean it was coming out in clumps turns out I have a hyperactive thyroid too which isn't helping w/ the hair loss I am getting it 10x worse.  Bonus part is I lost all my pregnancy went and then some:)  I am going to be a bald skinny girl!

My dh cleaned the shower drain and there is enough there for me to make a sweater.

I used to clog the drain in the tub and dh had to clean it 2x a week! It finally stopped for me around month 7 if I remember correctly.

As for the brusing, before I was pg I used to bruse easily and I had very low iron, not sure if it was related but perhaps look into that as women can often be low in iron.

If anyone feels concerned about the amount of hair they are losing, I was advised by a nutritionalist when it happened to me with DS1 to include strawberries, kiwi fruit and brazil nuts daily into my diet or to take a supplement that had vitamin B12 and the mineral Selenium in it as these encouraged healthy hair growth.  I too had a few bald spots and it was only after I had been munching away on brazil nuts and fruit for a few months that I noticed the hair was growing back  Of course this could have just been coincidence but I like to think it was my healthier diet!  ;D
