She's now weaned from night feedings!!
« on: August 05, 2006, 16:20:13 pm »
Hi everyone,
I have been a loyal baby whisperer follower since my ds was born 2.5 years ago.  This is my first time posting though!  I wanted to thank you all for your helpful advice for my dd, she's 4 months old.  I have learned so much from reading your posts.

My first lo is a touchy/spirited boy, so I thought my second would be a piece of cake!  She is an angel baby, but even angels have their problems!  She started sleeping though the night (12 hours solid, without a df) at 8 weeks.  This bliss continued until 13 weeks, when she started rolling.  She would get stuck in her crib, and cry.  Her bedroom is right next to my son's, and her crying would wake him up.  So I started to nurse her at night.  Of course, this worked like a charm.  Then she entered her 3 month growth spurt.  Then she realized it was fun to nurse and cuddle at night, when mommy could give her 100% attention.  And, she started to refuse to feed in the day.  So, I fed her more often (up to every hour), and she refused the breast more often.  She was starting to get up 5 times a night to nurse!!

I then started searching on your site, and transitioned her to the 4 hour easy.  She was previously on 2.5-3 hour easy, then was all over the place when I tried to feed her more.  I also started to wean the night time feeds.  I started with a 5 minute breastfeed, then went down by a minute a feed.  When she only nursed for 1 minute a feed for a full night, I stopped the feedings.  I first used a bottle of water, then a soother along with pupd.  And, it worked!!

I started this plan last Sunday, and by Wednesday, she was sleeping through the night again.  And, she's feeding every 4 hours in the day and taking 2 really good naps.  Thank you all so much!!

Hi there!  I was wondering how your daughter did with shortening the feedings?  My 6 month old DS (who will not take a bottle, so I can't do the water-down method), is fairly fiesty and picky when it comes to nursing.  I will not let him go longer than 15 minutes at night anymore and he seems "okay" with it.  Meaning, he will got back to bed but it's not like he's all that content and relaxed to do it.  I am afraid by going in and nursing for one minute (granted, after I get down that far after a few nights) he would be pretty ticked off that I came in to nurse him for a whole minute and it might backfire.  Did your DD do anything like this?

He is just about to cut his top two teeth, so I am still going to nurse him during the night and wait for those little buggers to come in, but plan on cutting it down by 1-2 minutes each night over the next week to see how he does.  Then over next weekend I told DH it will be just him all night.  I am going to sleep downstairs with the pillow over my head so DH can get him back to sleep w/o me there fretting over it the whole time!  The milk bar will be closed until 6 a.m.!!!

Thanks for your thoughts (you can tell I am not all that confident about my plan yet!) -

Cass

Hi Cass,
How many times does your ds wake to feed at night?  If he's feeding for 15 minutes, he may be hungry, and not just using the feed to settle him down.  Is he really taking in a 15 minute feed at night?  Or just feeding for a few minutes and then dozing off?

I used to let my dd feed for 15 minutes and sometimes more in the hope that she would sleep longer.  But, with her, it seemed the more I fed her, the more she would wake up and the less she would feed in the day.  I started to watch her and found that after 4 or 5 minutes, she would doze off and her sucking would really decrease.  So, I let her feed until this point and then broke her latch and put her back in the crib.  I was actually suprised how well she did with decreasing her feeds.  And, like I said she began to eat more in the day and became much happier.

How is your ds eating in the day?  Is he taking solids?  Is he on the 4 hour easy?  My dd had slept through before, so I knew she could do it again.  With a baby who needs to eat in the middle of the night (and not just because mommy did a lot of accidental parenting!!), it will probably be a slower process.  With my ds, he still needed to be fed at 5 am until he was a year old.  At that point, he just gave up the feeding.  He was bottle fed by that point, and would drink 4 or 5 ounces.  We had a lot of things going on at that time (I went back to work, we moved across the country), and looking back on it I'm sure he could have been weaned sooner.

Good luck!
Amanda

Hi Amanda -

He wakes anywhere from 1-2 times to nurse, although I don't think it's really out of hunger anymore.  The other night I actually stayed awake and alert (I usually just nod off there in the glider) when he woke at 1am to eat and he was only there for 9 minutes (incidentally, he was then up 2 hours later and we weren't able to get him back to sleep for 1 1/2 hours, when DH finally threw in the towel and took him for a car ride.  I tried to get him back to sleep, too, but he never "asked" to nurse, so I don't think he was hungry).  Last night he nursed at 3am for about 9 minutes.  I think I can start cutting back from that 9 minutes rather than 15 minutes.  During the day he eats really well:  nurses approx. every 4 hours, depending on his naps, and takes solids 3 times a day.  I could see him still needing to eat around 5am-ish as he goes to bed kind of early - around 7pm.  My older son stayed up until around 8 and finally fully slept through the night at 6 months.  This little guy is just not a good sleeper, plus he's got those teeth still making their way in.  Of course I wish I had a crystal ball to make sure he's really not hungry or to know that he will grow out of this himself in another month, but I am just plain tired of not sleeping!!!

Thanks for your thoughts and wish me luck!

Cass
