Solids and Reflux
« on: August 08, 2006, 03:48:06 am »
Starting solids may or may not help with reflux.
For some LOs the solids may bring on a reflux flare up, for others the solid material helps to keep everything down in the stomach where it belongs.

Don't start solids earlier for a reflux baby unless your Paediatrician/Doctor has approved it.

Be careful with the food choices you make - acidic foods can be very detrimental to a reflux baby who is already experiencing pain from acid.

Here are some foods to avoid or be cautious introducing to a reflux baby but it takes trial and error as some babies can tolerate these foods:

1. Whole milk and other dairy products such as cream and yoghurt
2. Citrus fruits such as oranges, grapefruit, pineapple
3. Tomatoes as they are very acidic
4. Spicy foods
5. Fatty meats, bacon, sausages
6. Chocolate (although shouldn't be part of a baby's diet anyway. Older children might also experience reflux flares from chocolate)

Common intolerances such as dairy, gluten and soy may trigger a reflux flare up. These are reflux mimics and starting solids may uncover the true diagnosis such as CMPI (cow's milk protein intolerance) or coeliac.

Root vegetables are the best things to start with when introducing solids to a Reflux baby like pumpkin, potato and sweet potato.

Keeping a food diary may help to identify reflux triggers, if there are multiple foods causing issues you might seek the help of a medical professional or dietician.
