3 1/2 month Waking to Feed
« on: August 10, 2006, 14:46:01 pm »
Hi my wee one has started to wake at midnight and will not settle without being fed.  She was sleeping 8-4am but now wakes at 12, 3 or 4am and 6am for feeds.  When i feed her she seems very hungry at midnight and at 3 but not so hungry at 6.

She is not fed to sleep for naps or bedtime so i don't think it is a sleep association thing.  Also her daytime feeds are sometimes a little erratic she is mostly every 3 hours but today for instance she was fed 9, 11.30, 2, 4, 8pm.

Any ideas?  I am making sure she gets plenty during the day, i also only one side feed but lately dd has been taking second boob.  i don't think there is a supply issue but wondering if she is just going through Growth spurt.

Has this been going on long, or just suddenly.   Sounds like it might be (as you thought) a growth spurt (usually one around 4 months... so you're in there).  Should only last a couple days, but could be a week.

Good luck!

Proud to have breastfed for a combined total of 35 months

Sorry to intrude on this thread but this is simliar to what I am experiencing I think. I guess I thought there was a significant growth spurt at 3 months and not necessarily at 4. My LO doesn't seem to be settled like she was and is waking up earlier than she used to. She would also sleep from 7 till about 6, now its 7 till 3-4. And unfortunately last night she was wide awake after her feed. I know I shouldn't but I let her fall asleep feeding. I'm away from home too which is also unfortunate. I find though she is feeding but falls asleep soon after... she seems to be feeding more often but not necessarily more... is this normal?

hi :),

we're having the same problem plus teething...  :'(
she's eating at least every three hours during the day [it was more than 4 hrs between the feeds before that] plus some three times during her night time. both breasts a feed. and if it's a bottle, 5,5 to 7,5 oz...
I was thinking it to be too soon for a growth spurt but now I'm almost 100% sure that's the problem with her eating. not with waking up A LOT at night- it's more due to teething I guess.

eh, those LOs... ;)

Hi thanks for replies

I was talking to a friend of mine who says all the mums in her baby group have babies at same age and they are all to a T complaining that their babies are waking more in the night lately.  So I think I can put it down to developmental thing and just keep routine and structure in place to help her (and me) ride it through. also have found having her sleeping iwth me means i get a much better nights sleep as well but with hubby coming back today we will not all fit in bed toghether so back to her bed:(

Monika - yes Grace was going very nicely and i thought wow she is ready for 4 hour easy but after 2 days she went completely erratic, staying awake for ages, then hungry and sleeping straight after eating and I have never normally fed her to sleep during the day.  Probably just settling in, however with the night feeds have decided to feed every 3 hours again still in the day in the hope(!!!) that it will help with night wakings.

hi Deidre :)

has it got any better for you :)
we're more or less back on track with Maja's feedings, I guess, but this night after I'd fed her at 2:30 she didn't go back to sleep until 4 am... and only because she got some Panadol... lol, I hate this teething thing already and it's only beginning.  :'(
you're saying that you decided to feed Grace every 3 hrs during the day, but for us it's that I can't really "decide" anything about her feeding. she just won't eat if she's not hungry.
and I too think those night wakings may be just develompental. and I really hope it will get better before I go back to work in September...

:)

Hi Monika

Well we still had feed at 12.30 last night but altogether only 2 night wakings and both of those to feed - so she went to bed at 8 (lots of resettling!!) then up for feed at 12.30, again at 4 and then up at 8am for a feed.   This definetly feels more manageable but am hoping to get rid of one of these feeds (preferably 4am!).

As far as feeding - it doens't seem to matter when i put Grace on boob she always eats like she is ravenous whether she had eaten an hour earlier or 4 hours earlier!  But trying to implelment 4 hour easy is on hold at the moment!

how is everything going for you?

Hi Deidre,

we had a perfect day yesterday, everything was going so smoothly :)

but today she's miserable again, in pain, her gums are driving her crazy [and us too  ::)] and I have to give her Panadol every 5/6 hrs to help her feel better.

and she woke up 5:30 today... but we had a pretty good night, DF at 10pm and one wake up at 2:30, but now I see it's more habitual than because of hunger: she's been waking around 2:30 for a few days now so I have to stop feeding her when she wakes. she wasn't eating much anyway: from one boob only and not longer than 5-6 minutes.

during the day she still won't eat sooner than after 4 hrs from her previous feed. which means that she's not getting enough calories and gulps down a bottle of at least 6 oz for DF.

I'm so sorry to see my baby unhappy and hurting :( but luckily I have my dh with me all the time now as he's on summer holiday :)

I hope everything's going good for you and little Grace :)

xxxx

Hey Monika

know you are on hols but thought i would do quick reply, grace has gone back to sleeping for longer periods, although am sure this will change all too soon.

However her long sleeps at night are really causing me pain with really engorged boobs, i am in a no-win situation!!

anyway have a great holiday!!
