Lego Duplo or Quatro
« on: August 04, 2006, 17:19:13 pm »
Which do you think is better, Duplo or Quatro?

DD is 16 mos old, so she falls in the Quatro range of 1 to 3 yrs. However I know I'll blink and she'll suddenly be 2 yrs old, which would mean she would fall in the Duplo 2 to 5 yr range.  Do you think it's better to start her off with the Quatro range and then move on to Duplos? Or just get the Duplos?

DD was bought a big tub of Quatro for her 1st birthday and it has had soooooooo much use!  She has Duplo at my mum's house, which was actually bought for me for my 1st birthday  :o!!!

I'm not sure what the duplo bricks are like now, but the ones at my mum's can be quite difficult for little hands to pull apart sometimes (even now), but they may have changed the materials that they make them with slightly.

Not much help I know (sorry!), but i'd probably stick with the quatro for the time-being.

We gave alex a duplo table (from Step 2) + a LOT OF DUPLO BLOCKS  for her 2nd birthday. she plays with then in bursts and then leaves them for a while.  Recently for alex's 3rd birthday I bought Liv a set of quatro (i buy the girls presents on their siblings birthdays so they are included  ;))  well they BOTH play with it every day Liv is 17 mo and alex is just over 3.  these are the blocks that Liv finally made the connection with that you have to actually interlock them (vs. regular blocks that just get laid on top of the others).

definitely invest in the quatro and save duplo for next year unless you have spare space and cash and want both.  kids love big blocks!  ;D

I'd vote for the Quatro, too.

Liam is 14mo & has fun playing with Aiden's duplo... mostly to pull it apart although sometimes trys to build things. But actually Liam likes the plain wooden blocks best & the stacking cubes that he can stack up more & we have a friend who has quatro & Liam showed no interest in playing with them even though Aiden & the others were playing with them... which normally means he wants to join in.

Pop-onz are pretty different - Katie has trouble putting them together and you can't build as many together.  She likes to play with them as well, but as far as building goes, the Legos are definitely better for that.

I'd say get the Quatro this year and the Duplo next, because they are actually compatible with each other, so having both makes sense.  My experience with Duplo is that it's really more for about 3 years on up (DH still likes to build with them!).  They are a little difficult for tiny hands to manipulate.

The Pop-Onz are pretty good, but they don't stay together as well as Legos, so if you bump your creation the whole thing will fall apart.

small problem - went to the shops and apparently Lego are stopping the quatro range because it's been a poor seller.  I rang Lego and they said there is no permanent stop to the range but they have sold out and aren't making any more right now.  so anyone in the UK know where I cna get some?

i would check out ebay for second hand stuff.  i got my huge tub of quatro in as new condition at a second hand shop here  - never see it in the shops in Oz  ::) and now i know why (we only get things that sell well elsewhere first i think). it is worth the effort to find as i swear the kids are loving it and i actually enjoy it too (whereas my enginner husband plays with the duplo with my 3yo building actual "things" quatro is great for just the figuring out the basicas of attaching the blocks and having simple fun)
