Supplementing with formula only ONCE for a BF baby

Hello,

My DS is 4 weeks old and has been breastfed exclusively since birth.  Now tomorrow, I have to go somewhere for about 6 hours and I can't bring him with me.  I have been pumping but it seems to me that the output is not enough.  If it happens to not be enough for my DH to feed him and ensure his satisfaction, can he supplement with formula for the day?  Please let me know as soon as possible!!  How do we do this?  We do not plan on continuing supplementation after tomorrow.  But for this one case, what is the impact to my bubs and how will it affect BFing from now on?

Hi, Have you tried giving him bf from a bottle before? Will he take a bottle?

If he takes a bottle and you're not able to pump a good amount for the day, your lo will should be fine with the formula though you may feel engorged due to not bfing during that time period. When my dd was around that age I posted the same question because I had to go to a Christmas lunch with the company I work for and my mom took care of my dd and gave her formula. She took it fine but I was engorged by the time I got home. It did not impact my supply at all the following days. Only problem I had was that my dd ended up having a milk protein allergy but I didn't know it at the time.

Hi there, my ds is now 4 months and has been both breastfed and bottlefed with breastmilk and formula since he was 3 weeks old. I did this as there were times (evening work commitments) when I could not breast feed him, and times when I had not expressed enough milk for a full feed for him. He is happy, healthy and has never shown any problems from his somewhat varied diet. I use the formula to either top up the amount of expressed breastmilk to a full feed, or just straight formula, both of which seem fine. Hope this helps  :)
