Little eater
« on: August 11, 2006, 13:06:29 pm »
My DS is 4 months. I breastfeed and he has 2 bottles during the day while I work. HE is on 4-hr easy. His eating is very erratic as far as how much he eats. Sometimes he will take only 2oz. sometimes he will take 6-7oz (but that is very rare). On average he only eats about 3oz during a feeding. But he can go 4 hours between feedings and not be hungry at all. He doens't even cry or get fussy to eat at the end of 4 hours. I just assume it's been 4 hours I should feed him. Yesterday he got up an hour early at 6am so his schedule was an hour off. He ate at 6, 10, and 2. At 2 he had only 2oz. Nighttime I do the same routine and put him to bed between 7-7:30. I bath, feed, book, bed. I fed him at 7p last night and he still wasn't crying to eat or anything, he was very contented for that 5 hours in between feedings. He didn't even have a good feeding at 7p. He ate for 5 minute and not even aggressive sucking. After taht I had to try and keep offering but he would bob off and just smile up at me. I ALWAYS feed in a dark room with no stimulation, otherwise he'll never eat. He is still feeding twice a night and I would love to wean those but since he just WON"T eat more during the day it's impossible to get him more daytime calories. I try clusterfeeding at night and that makes it worse, if I feed him at 5 he just will not eat anyting at 7 before bed. I would DF but he usually wakes up anyways around 10 or 11 and I feed. After that he wakes at 3a or 4a. I find that my milk supply is depleting between his short feedings and pumping at work. I used to pump a good 6oz (3.5 from one and 2.5 from the other), now I only pump 3.5 all together. Is my milk supply depleting because of him or is he eating less because of my milk supply? His daytimes are great, perfect 4 hour easy. he seems happy. I haven't weighed him since the last dr. appt a month ago and at that time he was 13lbs, I am figuring he is about 14lbs now. He was born at 7.2 so he is gaining. I just wish he was a bigger eater. Should I be worried - how do I deal with this?

If he is taking less then it's a chance that this is causing your supply to dip. However if at night he's breastfeeding - he could be taking enormous feeds (which you obviously can't measure) and he could be taking in more calories at night than you realise (and if your breasts are used to this that's when their supply is primed).

Gosh, that is surprising. Especially as you say his feeding wasn't that 'aggressive' and he only had 2oz at 2pm.

Was he even hungrier over night? My first thought is that he is reversing day for night even more. But if his demand wasn't greater that night then.. :-\

Pumping less isn't necessarily an indicator of lower supply but I can see how you would have been concerned especially as you obviously need to pump.

I know this sounds a cop out but I really would consider getting a professional opinion on this one. Perhaps contact your local La Leche League or phone a helpline. Or post on the La Leche League forum where you often get a response from a trained 'leader'.

Sorry I can't be more help. My only other thought is that he could be unwell but you say he seems quite content and is smiling up at you.

Thanks, I will do that. We also have a dr. appt on Monday - his 4 month appt - so I will bring this up to the doctor. I have a feeling he is taking very big feeds during the night as I do seem to be engorged during the night time, he feeds for much longer during the night for two reasons I think he is less distracted and more relaxed. During the day even if we go up to a dark room he just seems to want to play, it's like eating is a chore that takes away from playing. I try to mimic the night time during teh day and make it a peaceful experience but he has none of it. Just smiles at me and pulls my hair!

Good Luck with the doctor.

I know this doesn't help you but I'm always very impressed by babies who cleverly do the day/night thing to get more boob!!!! Sign of great intelligence I think!!! ;)
