foreceful let down, refulx and EASY
« on: August 11, 2006, 15:50:02 pm »
My dd is 7 weeks old.  I have quick let down and she eats in about 10 minutes, falls asleep, so I try to wake her up, change her diaper, burp her, etc.  Sometimes she will relatch for about 10-15 minutes (sometimes, this is 5 minutes on an off) and other times after all my attempts she will just refuse to eat.  She's gaining weight so it's not a weight issue.  I can't keep her up for another 30-45 mintues for A time b/c she will get overstimulated.  What do I do?

Are you concerned about keeping to the suggested time schedule?  The times are merely suggestions and every baby is different.   You can check out the EASY board for some specific/realistic times for 2 months.  Are you following the routine of EASY?  Is she sleeping immediately after eating (a diaper change does count as activty)  The key is to not allow her to fall asleep at the breast and then transfer her to bed.

Also, a 10 min feed is just fine, as long as she is gaining weight, producing diapers and happy (my girls fed in less than 10 min).

Thanks for your response.  Yes, I am doing EASY and sometimes a change of diaper is all the activity she gets.  In that situation, she's been awake (including feeding) for about 30 minutes and then down to bed she goes.  I am doing the 3 hr EASY which means that she would have to nap for 2 1/2 hours or else she will be eating earlier than the 3 hours.  She may do that for 1 nap (usually in the morning) but she won't do that for the next 3 naps.  Also, b/c of the reflux she wakes up frequently gagging, swallowing and can't get herself back to sleep.  This gets worse as the day progresses so it's not in every nap.  we have the crib elevated and she's on zantac for the refulx.  Trying to manage EASY and reflux has been a real challenge.  THe quick let down is also difficult b/c it seems to aggravate her reflux.  I've looked at the reflux 101 and other messages about positioning.  I'm really frustrated.

Please excuse me if you have seen this already:

Please keep in mind that EASY can be EASAEAS also.  IF she is not tired, there is no need to try to extend the nap to be 2.5 hours long.  It will get easier as time goes on, and I know how frustrating it can be (although dd2 did not have reflux issues, she just doesn't like to sleep).

I hope things get easier for you soon.  She will soon perk up also and begin staying awake longer.

Thank you!  The link is very helpful!  Also, I think EASAEAS is the way we'll have to go eventually when she's more alert.
