Switching from Soy to Hypo-Allergenic Formula?
« on: August 18, 2006, 18:33:26 pm »
Does anyone have any experience with switching from Soy (or even MB Formula) to an HA formula?  My ds is just not doing well on Soy (constipation/gas/won't sleep/etc.).  But our family dr said that he will probably reject the HA because of the taste now that he's used to Soy.  Has anyone switched at this age (5 months) and had success?

We didn't switch at 5 months, it was closer to 2 months, but hypoallergenic formula was referred to as LIQUID GOLD in my house!! ;D

As for the taste, yes, it's gross, btu I've not heard of a child rejecting it due to taste - they want their milk! ;)

I would absolutely try it. It is VERY expensive, at least it was in our area, but TOTALLY worth it!

How did you do the switch?  Did you go cold turkey on the old formula?  Or did you do a gradual switch?  I tried giving him a bottle of just Nutramigen (the only HA formula in powder form that I could find here) and he just spit it out.

We also were on Alimentum at 2 months, but went back to soy at 5 months.  A few weeks ago, Nathan had some illness which led us back to the Alimentum for a short time.  He spit it out too the first bottle.  I had to mix the soy with the other 1/2 and 1/2.  It worked for us and then I gradually added more of the Alimentum.  You might have to try mixing.  Good luck!!

I am now wondering if the soy is causing some of our lingering problems and we might be back to HA ourself ::)

Well our ped suggested that we try Nestle GS before going to an HA since my ds had never been on a milk-based formula she wanted to see if he'd except that first.  So far so good.  We are 70% GS and 30% soy and he's doing better already.  I'm optimistic!

Nutramigen was a blessing to my daughters reflux problem!  She did not have any problems taking it in.  I switched her gradually 1 feed per day over a period of 4 days.
Good luck!
