almost 8 months still has 2 night feeds!
« on: August 19, 2006, 08:49:55 am »
okay, here goes... my baby is almost 15 lbs  (hes not underweight as i and my husbandwere tiny and 1 was 4 months old before i hit 10 lbs.) the problem is that he wakes up at night alot of times 2 and on growthspurts 3 times a night. i know hes tiny and he doesnt hold much in his little tummy which may be a good reason for his nightly wakings. i dont know though if he is able to sleep without it. he eats solids daily so i thought he should be ale to go without it by now! i dont know! i need help! how do i take out the night feedings? is he able to yet?

1. my babys age is on the ticker below (7.5 months now)
2. our routine is as follows: (we dont have much of one after the morn.)
between 6:30 and 7:30am wake and feed 5-7 oz formula
7-8am play alone in play yard wile mommy and daddy sleep
8:00 wakes us up fussing and we put him in crib falls asleep alone within 10 min
8:15 sleeps for 1.5-2 hours till about 10am
10am familly wakes sometimes we feed him a bottle(about 5 oz) or 3rd foods with a bottle
10:20-ish he playes with the familly (with dad-rough, and/or with mommy-calm) half the time he playes in the playpen dependantly or on the livingroom floor dependanty      in front of us so we can watch him and also for interaction.
somewhere beteween then and next nap has a snack of fingerfoods (veggie puffs or chopped fruit or whole peas) we sprinkle them on a blanket on the floor or he sits in highchair
11 or 11:30 most of the time he will fall asleep on his own in about 10 or 20 min without winddown routine, other wise we use patshush.
1pm-ish wakes and has a bottle 5-7 ounces or has that and babyfood(if its fruit hell eat a whole jar of seconds food, but recently weve been introducing meet and more veggies and wont take more than a few bites. and has a bottle.
1:30 ish playes same as above at 10:20
about 2 pm has snack same as above
3 or 4pm about 50 percent of the time falls asleep independantly without wind down in about 10 or 20 min. or we use pat  shush. vary rarae occasions though, like today, we use pupd and if we do ith with pupd he sleeps only about 30 min and is up, other wise he sleeps about 1-2 hours
5:30 or 6 pm wakes has last meal of a bottle and/or babyfood and playes quietly with mommy (sometimes with dad) and sometimes has a bath. we give a bath about everyother day and its usually not at night, mostly somewere in between naps. gets dressed and diaper always before bed and then kiss nighty-night, layed in bed and sleepson his own almost always in about 30 min or less usually after playeing in his crib before he drifts off.
7:00 bedtime, hes usually asleep by 7:30 but on a bad day 8pm'

now the fun part. at 10 to 10:30 he wakes to have a 4-6 oz bottle. we always whisper if we need to talk he stays in his room with the lights off. no noise. he takes it and is half asleep through the whole thing. then we lay him in hbed on his tummy (i know its bad!! buts its how he likes to sleep! if i dont put him that way, he does himself.)
he falls asleep instantly after being awake for only about 5 min max.
then at 1 ish he wakes but we will only give him 3-4 oz and hes out again. then the same at sometime between 4-6 if not he sleeps till 7 am.

i have to add that he doesnt have a lovie yet, unless you want to call his pacifyer prop a lovie. he has it on rare occasions during the day but must MUST have it everytime to fall asleep. if it falls out he is able to pop it back in and does unless he drops it out of the crib wich doesnt happen often at all. and never at night does it happen. usually only for naps when he playes before bed.

Hi,
my ds was exactly the same at his age. I started to water down the bottles as suggested here on these pages. I did one bottle at a time and it took about 2 weeks. I never got to giving 1oz formula with say 5-6 oz of water, he stopped waking for food before that. I still gave the df til he was about 9 months cos i was scared to stop and he started sleeping through til 5 ish. I will add that in this time i also did pu/pd cos he was never good at going off to sleep and used to wake loads. This worked very well, i think the two helped each other if you see what i mean.
Hope this is of some help.

Hi Skibbit, :)
I wish I had words of wisdom to pass onto you but I don't as I'm in the same boat as you. My dd is 8months and has only slept through the night once from 7:30-6:30. I know to well the struggles you are having and I really feel for you. I have to say that the only time my dd wakes at night is because of hunger. The reason I know it's hunger is I have done everything suggested to skip the nightfeeds and nothing has worked. I tried the watering down meathod twice and no change,I've done the dreamfeed, that caused more wakings. I tried cluster feeding, that made my dd a snacker.I've redused the number of oz, that just made her wake up again to eat.

So for me I have come to the conclusion that it must be hunger and nothing I do will make it better. I wish I didn't have to get up to feed her but I really think when she's ready she will sleep through.

There are so many wonderful pepole with lots of great suggestions,I 'm sure they will answer and give
you some help. I just wanted you to know you are not alone and if you need some support I will be happy to help anyway I can. It dose get better, most nights my dd is only up once to eat and then right back to sleep.
Good luck
Kim

Skibbit,

I think that you're right about his size affecting the eating and how much he can hold in his little tank at once. If he's that tiny aty 7.5 months then I think it makes sense that he would need two night feeds. How much does he take at those feeds - is it a full feed both times? Some LOs need at least one night feed even up to a year or sometimes a bit longer, so it sounds like you have one of those LOs!

Another suggestion, consistency is very important. I would urge you to stick to a routine after the morning part of the day. It could mean a few days of not-niceness, but it will pay off.  :D

well when i feed him at night he takes the full 4 oz or so both times. he used to take 5.5 but i reduced it down to 4 becasue i thought it would help. should i try giving him more? maybe then he would wake only once? dont know if it would work though. he might not take more than 5.5. because thats the average that he can take. so that wouldnt work. i should just try to wait it out and see when hes ready. i believe that when he has the ability to do it he will sleep through just like Tatumsmom said. thanks everyone

I would definitely try the 5.5 rather than 4. You have nothing to lose, right??  ;)
