4.5 month old slipped out of routine
« on: August 24, 2006, 07:42:26 am »
I have been doing EASY since 3 weeks and my little girl loves it. But in the last month she has been in hospital and now started teething. Before that she was just begining to sleep through until 6 on a 3 hour routine (about 5x).The rest of the time she was making it to 5.30/5.45. She has never really woken more than once.

I have now had a couple of teething related night wakings, but realised that since her few days in hospital she have been keeping her on a structure but not the EASY routine. I.e I feed her every 3.5 - 4 hours and she has a 45 - 1.3 nap depending on the time of day.  But sometimes the nap is in the middle of the block and not at the end.

The main problem is that I am starting the routine at a different time every day depending on when she wakes up and when she fed in the night. So at the moment she is ravenous at 4am. I'm giving her a full bottle (5oz) and the of course when she wakes again at 6.30 she is not hungry. So usually I feed ber between 8-9.30 and then every 3.5-4  hours.

The problem is that she,s not getting enough food for the whole day and is also light because she's teething. With the result that she only put on 1 oz last week and may only be eating 2/3 of what she needs.

I know that I need to go back to starting at 7 to get her to sleepthrough and doing 4 hours but can't while she's feeding at 4. The other things is that she's never been a big eater and will only take max of 5oz per feed and often less. So the just give more food doesn't work.

How do I get her back on track?

Well, my LO's day starts between 5:30 to7. Her normal wake up time is 6ish, coz I need to go to work by 7:30. If she wakes up at 5ish, I will start her day earlier.
I had similar problem like you before, then I found a way that worked for me and my LO. My LO sometimes will wake up briefly around 3:30 then settles herself and falls asleep for an hour. Wakes up fully at around 4:30ish very hungry. Then I figured, why don't I DF her after she falls back to sleep... I gave her half of her feed (2-3oz) just enough calories for her to stretch another 1-2 hr.

 :) Thank you!!

I think a lot of it is actually teething. She didn't actually wake up unitl 5.30 but woke us up at 1 and the 3 times between 4 and 5 because she was crying in her sleep. We settled her down each time and then fed her 3oz like you suggested. She then slept until 9!!

So I think it's get used to the effects of teething.

One last question - when you fed her at 4.30, how much did she then take at 7? My LO tends to refuse if I try her again so soon.

I only give her about 2oz... The reason why I'll do DF is because I don't want her to relate eating with falling back to sleep in the night. I want her to settle herself. The DF is usually 3:45 (2-3oz) can hold her until 6ish.
I've feeding problem with my LO recently  :'( She roots, cries, but refues to drink milk. Very happy with water... plain water with no taste at all. Once she starts eating, she can finish almost 6oz.
