wi/wo first night success!
« on: August 24, 2006, 12:55:54 pm »
Good Morning Everyone,

I thought I would write a quick post to let everyone know that I finally started wi/wo last night.

For those that aren’t familiar with little Cole and I…he has never been a good sleeper.  I have done sleep training on and off for just over a year now (He’s 16 months old).  His sleep cues have always been subtle/none existent.  Fortunately for me, regardless of the sleep he gets he’s a happy little guy.  I went back to work May 1…and he was sleeping through the night for a whopping three weeks prior to that.  Then my new daycare lady let him CIO for naps (I got him outta there pronto!) and he went through major SA and was sick for 10 straight weeks.  Add to that the heat (air con doesn’t reach his room), potential teething, routine disruptions with vacations…and well, you see why I’ve put off sleep training.  Is it possible I respect his feelings too much?
Cole has been going down in my arms each night around 8:30, 14 hours after waking (to the minute).  He wakes anywhere from 11:30pm-1:30am and we go on the couch the rest of the night (a bad habit I created because I was desperate for sleep going back to work).  This habit has been instilled for 4 long months now. I just have to say I am so proud of my little man…here is how our night went:

I wanted to get him in his crib for 8:00, aiming for 8:30 asleep.  Things went a little wonky with dinner with Cole being unusually fussy, not wanting to sit in his chair, not able to entertain himself while I got dinner ready.  I was worried I wouldn’t even get to the sleep training dinner was taking so long!  Anyway, I finally got him in his crib by 8:30.  I told him he had water in his crib, and that I wouldn’t be taking him out until morning.  Told him I loved him, gave him a big hug and walked out.

Did 15 min.of wi/wo.  He was clinging to the side of the crib where our chair is….it seemed to upset him more when I would come in, so I tried 20 min. of talking to him from the hall. He would calm, then escalate, calm, then escalate…I went in a few times in those 20 minutes.  He wouldn’t let me lie him down though…still clinging to the crib.  Finally there was a time when he would let me lie him down…and I left, went right back in, laid him down, and left, right back in and on the third time he conked out.
45 minutes total.  Not bad!

Woke around 11:15, walked in once and laid him down.

Woke 1:15, gave teething tablets (just in case), offered water (refused), did wi/wo a few times and back down (total of 10 min.)

Woke 3: something, 2 wi/wo

Woke 4:50, 5:10, 5:30 each time 2 wi/wo then finally slept until 7.  When DH went to get him at 7 (Cole woke on his own), apparently when DH walked in the room Cole laid down on the crib!  LOL.

So, there is day 1!  I’ll keep you all posted on our progress….

Way to go!

It's funny, Jalyn's first reaction now is to lay down when we walk in the room.  We make sure to talk very happy to her when it is time to actually get up!

thought I'd pop on with an update for night 2.

Cole had a 3 hour nap yesterday at daycare which I was happy about, until this morning!

Anyway, I popped him in his crib at 8:30pm and walked out.  Went back in once.  And, that was that!  WOW, was I surprised.

Still had a waking around 11 that DH took care of and then to be honest I'm not sure if he woke around 1 am or not :-\  I guess if he did I laid him down in my sleep because i sure don't remember!  Then he was up at 4:30 and never really went back down.  I mean, he'd go down, but only for 15-20 minutes and be up again.  At 6am DH went to get him...and I could hear it wasn't going well.  Then he brought him into our bed!  GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrr >:(  He said "it sounded like he said I want mama".  of course he wants me!  that's what he's used to.  oh well.  He never did go back to sleep anyway and we got up for good at 6:20 when DH got into the shower.

I will tell daycare to limit nap to 2 hours.  And I think we should have things solved fairly soon!

nope-he's transitioning to toddler room so his nap yesterday was 12:15-3:15 :o

I wouldn't mind the long nap if it was earlier.  His regular nap when he fully transitions will be 12:30-2:30

Yeah!  I hope that things improve with the nap at a better time for him, although he'll likely need a super long nap at daycare today what with the 8 hour night sleep!  Otherwise I guess it's the 6:30 bedtime tonight!  Keep up the good work.

Thought I would post a quick update for nights 3, 4 and 5

Night 3:  took a bit to settle Friday night.  He had been up from 2:30pm as he was in the toddler room and they have to wake him or he’ll get trampled!  Given his early morning start (around 4:30am) I can see why he was tired.  I was trying to watch for sleep cues, but alas, after almost 17 months they still aren’t obvious to me.  I put him down at 7:55 and given that he was so tired he did really well and only took 15 minutes to settle.  I had to stand by the door though so he could see me, but at least I wasn’t in the room.  He woke at 9:30 and sometime around 1am, then up for the day at 6am (boy, I really didn’t miss those early mornings while we were on the couch!).  both times settled back quickly)

Night 4:  Down at 8pm in with 2 wi/wo, woke at 11 but resettled himself-yippee!  Then not up until 5:50 am.  Happy dance!

Night 5:  His sleep was thrown off yesterday as I had to go to my moms and he fell asleep at 11am in the car.  I tried to transfer him at noon to his pack n play, but no go.  He then fell asleep on the way home from 3:45-4:30.  I really thought I was in for trouble at night…but I managed to get him down in 20 minutes and he fell asleep at 8:50.  He needed me at the door though.  He still doesn’t know how to hang out and play if he’s not tired, but I think he’ll get there.  He didn’t wake at all until 4:30am (yay) and then again at 5:30 but both times settled back after lying him down and he slept until 7.

I guess I have to try and conquer those early morning wakings…but I think that will come in time.  it’s only been 5 days, and he’s used to me being there next to him when he stirs…so I guess that may take longer to break, especially since he’s not as sleepy then as he is middle of the night.  I know I should wait a little bit to go to him…but I fear he’ll wake too much then won’t go back down.  I just couldn’t handle a 4:30 am start right now.  Any thoughts?  Not sure I want to do wake to sleep either, never really worked for him.

K, gotta run!  As I’m sure many of you have felt…why didn’t I start this sooner???

Yay Traci!

That's great that you're making so much progress!  What's he doing in the early hours when he wakes up?  Is he crying for you or is he just happy to hang out.  I would think that if he's crying for you for more than a short amount of time I would keep going to him and laying him back down, esp since it seems to be working right now.  He'll get there!  Does he have anything in his crib to play with?  Katie currently sleeps with about 10 stuffed animals and those and her Fisher Price aquarium keep her amused before she goes to sleep (and when she wakes up too).

Hey Erin-In Cole's whole life he has woken up ONCE without crying.  I think it's just his nature unfortunately.  He has never played before sleep or upon waking.  The day he does will be a HUGE breakthrough for us.  Last night he was chatting to himself and slamming his legs around and stuff...but I had to be within sight...the moment I left the doorway he cried.  I guess it may just take time.  I mean, he's been held to sleep for 4 months, right?  So anyway, I will try to count to 100 before going to him in the morning in hopes he gets the picture.  He does understand what's expected though, because once over the weekend I just went to the doorway and said, still sleeptime, lay down and he did.  Just not for very long.

Sounds like progress to me -- even if it is SLOW progress.  Hang in there, you're doing great :)
